Book Description

October 27, 2009
Jess Wirth lives a dreary life. He spends most of his time crammed inside a cubicle, toiling as a network engineer and stewing over the details of his ugly divorce. But when he finds his co-worker dead in the basement of their office, Jess’s life takes a surprising—and unpleasant—turn. The police quickly declare the death a suicide, but Jess isn’t so sure. Not long after he begins digging into the victim’s work, another co-worker turns up dead, convincing him once and for all that something sinister is brewing behind the cubicle walls. His investigation leads him to a mysterious woman name Leah, who pushes him to entrust her with the information he’s collected about his dead colleagues. Wary of Leah’s motives yet inexorably drawn to her, Jess keeps her at arm’s length…until an attempt is made on both their lives. Realizing they are close on the trail of a dangerous criminal, the pair race to expose a data theft ring before they become the killer’s next victims.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Jess Wirth lives a fairly dull life. He spends weekdays crammed inside of a cubicle at OptiData, toiling as a network engineer and stewing over the details of his ugly divorce--his only reprieve is weekend trips to the lake. But when he finds his co-worker Carl's dead body hanging from a tangle of cables in the basement of their office, Jess' life takes an unexpected turn. Though the police quickly rule Carl's death a suicide, Jess can't believe that's true and begins to poke around Carl's computer files, searching for clues that might shed some light on why Carl died. Not long after, another co-worker turns up dead--Benita, the cleaning woman who was in the office building on the night that Carl died--convincing Jess that something sinister is brewing at OptiData. Complicating matters is the recent arrival of an attractive temp named Leah, who shows an unusual interest in the recent deaths and pushes Jess to share the information he'scollected about his colleagues with her. Leah, unbeknownst to Jess, is actually an undercover agent with the Department of Homeland Security, investigating a large-scale identity theft ring connected to OptiData. Jess is wary of Leah's motives yet inexplicably drawn to her, and keeps Leah at a distance as he tries to figure out who he should trust. But when an attempt is made on their lives, Jess and Leah realize that they're quickly closing in on the trail of a dangerous, cold-blooded killer and must hurry to uncover--and stop--the thief before they become his next victims. --Kirkus Discovery Reviews

3.0 out of 5 stars Predictable, shallow characters, December 10, 2009

First, a couple of disclaimers:
1. Russ White is an acquaintance of mine
2. I have read a lot of his technical books, and have tons of respect for his knowledge and ability.
3. I really don't care for the mystery novel genre

Loss of Carrier is the kind of book that tries to please everyone, and seems to end up pleasing no one. Computer folks will want to argue the technical details, the faith-based folks will probably want more theology, gun enthusiasts will want more shootouts and mystery readers will want a less predictable plot.

Think of a combination of Miss Marple and Ned Flanders, who's been dropped into the set of "Office Space," and you understand the story. Hero discovers crime, but no one believes him. So he investigates himself. Uh oh! the bad guys are on to him! They must try and kill him! Wait, he's saved by a pretty girl who believes in him! Can they solve it together? Will they stay alive? Will romance bloom? You can pretty much guess all the answers. It's a very predictable story - but maybe all murder mysteries are.

I wish Russ had put more depth into his characters. Unfortunately, they are one-dimensional. The good guys are not just Christians, but salt-of-the-earth, take-milk-and-cookies-to-old-ladies-in-the-rest-home kinds of people. The bad guys are soulless evil villains without redeeming qualities whatsoever. More complex characters would raise this story above the cartoonish plot it has.

3.0 out of 5 stars Murder and Networking rolled into one..., November 29, 2009

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Loss of Carrier (Paperback)
Loss of Carrier was a stretch for me. Not necessarily in a bad way. A technical style of book that actually fed that recent hunger I have had to read a suspense/ mystery. The book goes into great detail about the workings of technical things such as computers. It is explained well, but a bit TMI at times. I enjoyed the story line and where Russ White was taking me as the reader so I plugged on (no pun intended...). I appreciated how the book is not overly Christian with an overwhelming message, but instead author Russ White has woven together a story that reflects Christians in what feels to be a natural light.

Russ White writes tech as that is what he knows well. There are three more books planned for this series. This would be an author I would like to keep an eye on and see how this story develops as well as his writing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Geek Crime Story, November 23, 2009
This review is from: Loss of Carrier (Paperback)
Thank you to the author for my copy of this Christian fiction mystery. I learned a little technology as I read since the protagonist is a geek network engineer. Although it gets technical, explanations are given so that even I could understand.

It's disconcerting to trip across misspellings and grammatical errors, and unfortunately, this book contains some. In addition, the flow is a bit choppy. However, the compelling plot keeps the reader turning pages.

There's a scene where the protagonist and his love interest debate the merits of waiting for sex until after marriage.
