Cool Calm and Embedded Records Doin the Damn Thing,
By HoSlappa (ATX, Texas) - See all my reviews

Babbletron was no doubt a dope release from Pete & Co. but this steps it up to new level. With cool, calm and melodic beat production to accompany Pete's fluid lyrical rythm, you'll want to roll down the windows in the ride for this one. By track three you'll know exactly what I mean. Like the Babbletron release, these cats keep the whole project fresh while changing some beats up as many as three times on a single track. There is no point in trying to point out tracks that are better than others because on this release, there is something for everyone. Progressive, Original, and Dope: pick this one up. Peace.

Fresh Intelligent Lyrics,

This is simply a wonderful cd. Completely agree with the other reviewer. If you haven't heard of Babbletron, do yourself a favor and give them a listen, some other unique hip hop artists to check out that you may not have heard of DarkLeaf and Bigg Jus. Highly Recommend This CD, very different than mainstream hip hop, almost jazzy.

I purchased this album recently after hearing songs from it on Pandora radio. This is one of the few albums I can actually listen to all the way through without skipping a single song. I've been bumping this constantly since I've gotten it; on my way to work, home, and to parties. The thing I like most about cool calm pete is how you get the feeling he's being very honest with you. Very little if any embellishment and from the sample choices being used you get the feeling the guy has an apprecaition for many different styles of music. A defenite classic.

Cool Calm Pete has a track on the Definitive Swim free Def jux sampler, "Get with the times" and it steals the show. That song led me to find this album, and I'm very glad I did. It's everything I love about underground hip-hop. It's a loose collection of obscure music and vocal samples, pasted, MF DOOM style, into quirky, catchy songs. It doesn't keep hitting the same style like a DOOM album, and Pete shows himself to be both a musical and verbal chameleon. Take the track "New Jack Biddie". The loop on that track sounds straight out of DOOM, and guest Jaymanila even repeasts "trucker hats" during a break much like DOOM. But Pete throws us a curve by doing a fantastic Slick Rick imitation on his vocal turn. The Slick Rick imitation pops up again on the hilarious "Brush PSA", with Jungle Mike adding a MC Chris-esque turn. Pete knocks out a great fast rap, with a nod to Chuck D, on "Windsprints". The track "F*$#%#$* Youuuuu" has a great hook reminiscent of Edan. Pete doesn't just do imitations, he's got his own style that's relaxed but not as loping as, say, Del. And he crafts beats that fit it perfectly, as in my current favorite song "tune in", which features the lyric that is the title of the review.
This album is a great find, and I'll be checking out Babbletron next.

If you like hip hop, you deserve it to yourself to at least give Cool Calm Pete a try. He creates interesting stories in his songs, from funny to sad, and the cuts he uses work well with his style.
I first saw him opening for the Perceptionists, and I'm glad I did. I've been listening to him ever since.

Pete sure is calm...,

As his name indicates, Cool Calm Pete has brought a new style to the hip-hop table (if there is such a thing...). CCP uses his down-tempo, somewhat lazy-sounding pure lyrical talent to create a web of imagery not yet found in a hip-hop album. The title of the album, Lost, describes the record's musical vibe exactly; accompanied by CCP's rhymes, it is guaranteed to put the listener into a dreamy state, should one's environment allow for such a reaction. Smart, witty lyrics accompanied by great sampling make CCP's Lost a must have for those who enjoy underground hip-hop.

I bought this CD on a whim, I just saw him on the def jux site and I saw he was a korean so I orded the cd cause i was really curious. What a suprise, this cd is probably my favorite hip hop cd of 2005, even over Edan's Beauty and the Beat. Pete and the other guys use some cool samples on the beats and of course the drum tracks are simply flowin and each song has a great beat to it. Like the other guy said, even within certain songs he is switching the samples and drum tracks like 2-3 times. All the guest spots are good too, it all fits in nicely to this great cd. I really like Cool Calm Pete's delivery, it's just pleasing. Great debut, I can't wait to see more from this guy.
