Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

There are 100 video sequences from the BBC Natural History Unit, 400 sound clips and narrated tours, and 300 photographs and illustrations on this disc, with more than 100 species represented, ranging from scorpions to black bears. Many of the photographs are close-ups of cactus spines?lots of cactus spines?and the videos of snakes and spiders. You reach this media via a step-by-step Treks and Trails process: starting at a Field Centre (English spelling is intentional), you prepare for your trip and then set out with your animated guide, traveling by foot and a Jeep. Also at the Field Centre are a conference room (hear informative lectures) and a library and media room (locate supplemental information about desert plants and animals). The subjects may appeal to desert enthusiasts, but the implementation will not: we had major difficulties getting this disc to run on several machines, all of which met or exceeded specified system requirements, and never got it to run on Windows 3.1. It ran disjointedly under Windows 95 on a 586 200 MHz Pentium machine. Bottom Line: Not recommended with the number of installation and running problems encountered.
