Has there ever, in the history of 20th century music, ever been a more influential organisation than that of the American Folk Blues Festivals (AFBF)?

Founded in 1962, this series has surely had a lasting effect on the European, American, and indeed interational, music scenes. Where would hip hop, jazz, funk, rock, heavy metal or world music be without the blues? Blues is the foundation of the popular music of the 20th century. Its intensity, rhythms and harmonies have affected many peoples and culture, up to and including the music of Africa, the alkand and Spanish flamenco. The blues captures the sentiments of the people in a nutshell. Of course, in the beginning it was just a feeling. But not just of the blues, but also of emptiness. The idea of tracking down and bringing surviving blues legends to Europe was that of jazz publicist Joachim Ernst Berendt at the end of the 1950s. The new style of rock 'n' roll was beginning to take a foothold, jazz was in the mean time beginning to be celebrated in Europe, but all too little was heard of the blues, despite itself being the musical foundation of jazz and rock 'n' roll.

It was up to Horst Lippmann and his partner Fritz Rau to realise the idea of the AFBF and bring the best Afro-american blues performers to concert halls (!) for a European audience. First they contacted Willie Dixon. The influential composer and bassist knew the Chicago blues scene like no other, and he was also able to put them in touch with musicians of the Deep South.

The first festival was in 1962. The American Folk Blues Festival took Europe by storm. In the years 1962 to 1972 the blues greats were introduced to European audiences.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great companion to the famous L&R recordings. March 17, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
These two discs contain just under 2 hours of music from greats like Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Memphis Slim, and Sonny Boy Williamson II (Rice Miller). Disc one (recorded in Bremen,Germany in 1963) follows the format of the original shows. Each artist would sing two or three numbers, then join the backing band. Musicians included many styles of blues, and were selected by Willie Dixon. This affords modern listeners some great combinations of players. On full-band tunes, this included an amazing line-up: Muddy Waters and Matt Murphy on guitar, Otis Spann-piano, Willie Dixon-acoustic bass, and Bill Stepney, drums. Muddy and Sonny Boy each sing some rarely-performed tunes, and the show is topped off by acoustic blues legends Lonnie Johnson and Big Joe Williams.
Disc two is culled from three different shows recorded from 1963-65, also in Germany. Bookended by two takes of "Della Mae" by John Lee Hooker, you hear one tune each from Big Mama Thornton, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy, Big Walter Horton, Dixon, soul singer Sugar Pie DeSanto, Buddy Guy, JB Lenoir, Fred McDowell, Roosevelt Sykes, Memphis Slim, Sleepy John Estes, and "one man band" Doctor Ross.
Sound quality is excellent on these true stereo recordings, especially the "woody" beat of Dixon's bass. Only drawback is the bulky fold-out cardboard case. Still, a terrific package-with few, if any, recordings duplicated in the original releases, box set, or the DVD's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Priceless Recordings In Stereo! February 5, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
This 2 CD Set, is a great companion to the 4 DVD Compilation Set known as 'American Folk & Blues Festival.' I originally downloaded this in MP3 format, but even though I have gapless ripping facilities, I still got those awful one second gaps in between track changes, which interrupts the applause of these live recordings. It spoiled my listening pleasure of these gems, so I went ahead and ordered this set on CD instead. Any recordings of Sonny Boy, Muddy, and John Lee in their prime, are a treasure worth having.
