3.0 out of 5 stars lost canyons
track #3 was awsome, the rest, very "flutie" sounding throughout.
track #3 was unique and inspiring. worth the purchase just for that track.

The really special thing about this recording is that the sounds work.... The entire CD is woven together with enriched textures and blended tonal qualities from around the world. The featured instrument is the Anasazi Flute. The haunting echoes of this ancient instrument evokes mental images of towering mesas and the red rocks of the Southwest. Let the CD transport you to a time of expansive vistas and monumental rock towers. You will not be disappointed, you will just want more!

5.0 out of 5 stars AWARD-WINNER SCOTT AUGUST CAPTURES SPIRIT OF AMERICAN SOUTHWEST ON ALBUM, March 13, 2008
This review is from: Lost Canyons (Audio CD)
In recent years, Scott August has become one of the more successful musicians playing Native American wooden flutes. LOST CANYONS is his fourth album. In this genre, the ultimate recognition is a Native American Music Award (the NAMMYS). One of his previous CDs, SACRED DREAMS, won a NAMMY, and his other two recordings, DISTANT SPIRITS and NEW FIRE, were both nominated. In addition, NEW FIRE won an Indian Summer Music Award which is prestigious within this music community because it is voted on by the Native musicians themselves. August has become such a master of this type of flute playing that he was asked to headline the Zion Native American Flute Festival in 2006 and 2007, and the Central Coast Flute Festival in 2007. August also has released a DVD, ANCIENT LIGHT, of his images of the Southwest with his music as the soundtrack.

LOST CANYONS captures the scenic beauty and enchanting feelings of spending a full day from morning to evening in the American Southwest desert wilderness, something Scott likes to do whenever he gets the chance. He visits ancient Indian ruins, admires the old paintings on the rock walls, enjoys the spectacular scenery, watches the birds soar and the weather change, and plays his flutes so they echo off the canyon walls. This is the feeling you get when you listen to his latest recording.

All but one tune features Native American flutes, subtly backed with many different sounds ranging from piano and guitar to kalimba, udu, oud and other world music instruments. It is an enchanting, serene mix that will put you in a spiritual frame of mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Anasazi flute, an instrument lost to human ears for over a millennium, March 2, 2008
This review is from: Lost Canyons (Audio CD)
Lost Canyons is a music CD resurrecting the haunting echoes of the Anasazi flute, an instrument lost to human ears for over a millennium. Musician Scott August evokes the essence of the sacred canyons of the American Southwest through his memorable performances on location in seldom-visited canyons. The tracks blend traditional native-style wood flutes, clay flutes such as those used in ancient Mexico, and "tribal-techno" background instrumentation. An unforgettable album especially recommended for armchair travelers and anyone interested in the listening to the legacy of ancient winds. The tracks are Morning Star (5:03); Raven Dance (6:33); Desert Skies (5:24); Where Spirits Dwell (6:47); Swallows & Nighthawks (3:53); Thunder on the Mesa (5:42); Thermals (2:52); Lost Canyons (8:33); Huukyangw [Wind] (6:30); Chasing the Sun (6:28); Twilight Canyon (5:45); and Evening Star (3:39).

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful composition and a very talented musician., December 5, 2007
This review is from: Lost Canyons (Audio CD)
Lost Canyons is incredible! August's ability with the difficult Anasazi flute is mind boggling. The beautiful resonant sounds he obtains with it are very moving. His music is very inspiring and calming to me. Every disc he creates has its own personality and Lost Canyons takes me straight to the remote high desert areas I love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost Canyons another Scott August triumph !, May 16, 2008
This review is from: Lost Canyons (Audio CD)
Just received the "Lost Canyons" CD in the mail today and am as impressed with the music on it as I have been with all of Scott August's past recordings. The mixture of modern instruments with the Native flutes and other World instruments is just masterful. There are but a handful of artists in varying music genres, whose music I will basically buy "sight unseen" and Scott August is one of them. My wife and I put the CD on at night to relax us as we sleep. Most therapeutic I must say as it helps us relax and sleep well throughout the night (we put the CD on repeat so it plays all night). You really can't go wrong with this CD if you're looking for something to relax you and take you away from the mad rush world we live in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating, March 4, 2008
This review is from: Lost Canyons (Audio CD)
Years past my journeys took me to Monument Valley, the Grand Canyon and ruins of old Pueblo. With the Anasazi rim-blown flute supported by piano, guitar and numerous world-musical instruments I was reminded of those places as if it were yesterday. From Morning Star to Twilight Canyon, this is his MOST incredible work. A comment made in one of the cover sheets said "Some canyons are lost, because no one goes there". Trust me, Scott August will take you their and you will not want to come back. Enjoy!!

It's hard to phrase the intriguing way Scott's "Lost Canyons" makes me feel because the music speaks a very unique language. Each song masterfully peers into, gazes upon and spies out the diverse beauty, power, love and justice of the wildlife and land traversing the red rocks of the Southwest. The birds that navigate with the temperate winds and waters, the weather that continues to shape the land, or just the stillness that envelopes you while standing, lying or sitting in the air of this place....... this music perfectly captures all its incomparable greatness. You can experience this land's existence with each note of this gorgeous album. ... so very b e a u t i f u l

I have all of the Scott August albums. Lost Canyons is one of my favorites. I like the Anasazi flute that is incorporated into this album. I often sleep to Scott August's music and definitely recommend finding copies for yourself.
