PreS-Gr 1-An important subject to children and their caregivers is given inadequate treatment here. When a young boy loses his father in a large department store, he begins searching for him. He catches several partial glimpses of patterns or clothing that he believes his dad is wearing but each time he is distressed to discover that they belong to someone else. The child finally locates the irritated man on an escalator and the book ends with the boy being led out of the store. The story offers little to children to help them understand or cope with a frightening experience of this kind. None of the adults in the book, who appear either expressionless or frowning in the watercolor paintings, recognizes the boy's situation or offers help, and the reunion between father and son is unsatisfying. The text is stilted and does not sound like the voice of a young child. The pages that are partially cut away to provide the snatches of fabric and clothing the boy spies from afar may provide some interest for children, but the overall mood of the paintings and sparse text is cold and uninviting.-Ellen Vevier, Round Rock Independent School District, TX

Children LOVE Taro Gomi,
By Shauna Bray Gowen (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I Lost My Dad (Children's Books from Around the World) (Hardcover)
This book has been critisized for being a cold and uninviting treatment of the subject of a child getting lost. In my experience as a mother and elementary school teacher I have found the exact opposite to be true. Children respond with rapt interest to the colorful illustrations and marvel as the die-cut pages are turned to reveal something unexpected every time. The language is simple and easy to follow, and the story of a young child separated from his parent in the mall is something children can all relate to. Taro Gomi's books are especially popular with young children (1-7yrs) for their simple text and unique illustrations and "I Lost My Dad!" is no exception. I recommend this and all Taro Gomi's books to parents of children who love to read.

A young boy keeps getting hoodwinked.,

A young boy goes out in search for his dad in a department store after getting separated from him.
There are several picture books out there to help instruct your child about safety. That is not the point of this book. The boy thinks he spots his dad hat, shoes, or tie but when you turn the page it turns out to be someone or something else. It's like a lift-the-flap book but it never gets ruined because there are no actual flaps to flip. A storytime favorite. Delightful.

By Love To Cook (IL, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I Lost My Dad (Children's Books from Around the World) (Hardcover)
My children loved this book when we borrowed it from the library.
They wanted to read this book for a whole week. They could not get enough of it. The graphic and the story line kept them interested. They are delighted by the flip pages and cut outs.
