Andy Garcia directed, starred in and composed the score for this obvious labor of love movie, set in late-'50s Cuba. In his spare time, he also played the piano in the Lost City Orchestra, the de facto house band that performs Garcia's music as well as numbers by the likes of Ernesto Lecuona, widely acknowledged as one of the greatest Cuban composers ever ("A la Antigua," "Danza Lucumi," and "La Comparsa" unfurl glorious string charts). Garcia plays a nightclub owner in Havana right before and during the revolution, thus making music an integral aspect of the movie--no wonder this two-CD set features 45 tracks. In keeping with the movie's period feel, the non-score songs are made up of an array of amazing Cuban dance classics by the likes of Rolando Laserie, inspired player of boleros and guarachas, or mambo master Cachao López (the subject of a documentary directed by Garcia). The latter performs the instrumental version of the gorgeous "Si Me Pudieras Querer," the song that serves as the movie's love theme, while Bola de Nieve handles the vocal one. It was brave of Garcia to juxtapose his own compositions to such numbers, but it's also hard not to think they sound a little bland by comparison. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I just received my copy of The Lost City soundtrack and it is everything I had hoped it would be.. Every song used in the film has been included in this magnificant collection. The soundtrack is two CD's worth of listening pleasure - 45 songs in all! The audio quality is superb too - absolutely clear.. A fantastic job and a definite "must have" for anyone who loves Cuban music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Soundtrack!!!, May 16, 2007
This review is from: Lost City (Audio CD)
I had to wait almost a year to get this sensational soundtrack. It added so much to the movie, mixing old Cuban songs together with some new compositions that blended exquisitely with the story behind the movie.

I was born in Cuba, and the music brought back so many memories from my childhood. This album, however, will appeal to anyone that loves Cuban music and is worthy to be added to your music collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent history of Cuban music, March 18, 2007

This review is from: Lost City (Audio CD)
What a wonderful soundtrack. There are original tracks plus music from the motion picture. There are re-recordings by the "Lost City Orchestra" of Lecuona -- one of Cuba's premier composers -- and of "La Bella Cubana" (a haunting piece -- though it's not complete here). This soundtrack serves a wonderful "history" of the golden age of Cuban music -- even if you didn't liek the film, you'll love the soundtrack!
