Editorial Reviews

Andy Garcia directed, starred in and composed the score for this obvious labor of love movie, set in late-'50s Cuba. In his spare time, he also played the piano in the Lost City Orchestra, the de facto house band that performs Garcia's music as well as numbers by the likes of Ernesto Lecuona, widely acknowledged as one of the greatest Cuban composers ever ("A la Antigua," "Danza Lucumi," and "La Comparsa" unfurl glorious string charts). Garcia plays a nightclub owner in Havana right before and during the revolution, thus making music an integral aspect of the movie--no wonder this two-CD set features 45 tracks. In keeping with the movie's period feel, the non-score songs are made up of an array of amazing Cuban dance classics by the likes of Rolando Laserie, inspired player of boleros and guarachas, or mambo master Cachao López (the subject of a documentary directed by Garcia). The latter performs the instrumental version of the gorgeous "Si Me Pudieras Querer," the song that serves as the movie's love theme, while Bola de Nieve handles the vocal one. It was brave of Garcia to juxtapose his own compositions to such numbers, but it's also hard not to think they sound a little bland by comparison. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Product Description

Andy Garcia's critically acclaimed film The Lost City is a personal and emotional story about a Havana family during the time of the Cuban Revolution. The impact of the historical events on their diverging lives is conveyed through this exceptional soundtrack. The two-disc soundtrack contains classic Cuban tracks from Cachao, Benny More, Chappottin, Omar Sosa, Ruben Gonzalez, and Bola de Nieve, plus Andy Garcia's own very personal score. The music plays an integral part in the film and many reviewers have raved about the significance of the music in the narrative of the story. This is a soundtrack for film aficionados as well as Cuban and world music fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Soundtrack!!! May 16, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I had to wait almost a year to get this sensational soundtrack. It added so much to the movie, mixing old Cuban songs together with some new compositions that blended exquisitely with the story behind the movie.

I was born in Cuba, and the music brought back so many memories from my childhood. This album, however, will appeal to anyone that loves Cuban music and is worthy to be added to your music collection.

The soundtrack is two CD's worth of listening pleasure - 45 songs in all! The audio quality is superb too - absolutely clear.. A fantastic job and a definite "must have" for anyone who loves Cuban music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Then and Now May 10, 2007
Format:Audio CD
This music is Timeless, I literally have been listening to this 'CD' non stop since i received it. It has every song featured on the film, a film which all cubans whom have imigrated to the US and beyond can relate to. I have sat down and played the "cd" during a game of domino with my grandmother and her best friend of 96 yrs in age, they loved it. I was raised in California and too young to remember when we imigrated to the U.S. But, this CD brings to life all the memories of family gatherings and stories my family has shared with me. I strongly encourage everyone to add this "CD" to there collection.

Format:Audio CD
Watched the movie last week and have had to see it twice more. The music is as haunting as it is touching. Muy bien Senior Garcia for giving us both a touching movie and a beautiful soundtrack. The soundtrack has significant meaning since my mother recently passed and this was the music I grew up with. Simply, !Bello!.

I am looking forward to more of your work as a Director.!Adelante!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love Cuban music... December 11, 2007
Format:Audio CD
If you love Cuban music, you will love this CD. I saw the movie "The Lost City" about two years ago and, being of Cuban heritage, loved it and the movie's soundtrack. I could not find a mention of the soundtrack anywhere that I usually shop for CDs until I found it on Amazon. I was not disappointed! Great mix of different styles of Cuban music, well worth the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rekindled the Cuban Spirit! December 2, 2007
By NYQban
Format:Audio CD
Most of my life I've been content saying I was Cuban. However, I really don't know much about my Cuba since I was born in 1958 and left my country in 1961. The heritage I've gained has been fortified by my relatives who raised me here in the U.S. The Lost City Soundtrack rekindles my Cuban spirit with music my relatives played for me as a child. It's an important piece of music anthology for anyone who needs a spirit lift -- especially if you want to reminisce about the happiest days of your life. And for those who have no need for that "spirit lifting," but just like good music, I recommend you buy this CD and listen to where the "Salsa Music" roots come from and the proud African and Spanish Cultures intertwine.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lost City October 13, 2007

I was aware of Andy Garcia in his 'tough guy' film rolls. I was not aware of his accomplishments as a musician. Bravo!! I am proud to have this soundtrack so that I do not have to play the movie over and over again.

Is really biased The Lost City ?
You have spoken the truth & the truth hurts deeply. Corruption was the #1 business leader
and the death to what could've been a great society. At the time the USA could not deal with the likes of Castro so we lost out. Also keep in mind that Cuba does not own major resoures like OIL or else... Read More
