This 4-song download would have been called a "maxi-single" in the old days. As much as we enjoy downloading, one of the severe limitations of the form is the complete lack on information provided. It's all just music, no details. What I heard was the album version of a good song from Coldplay, followed by an acoustic version with piano ("Lost?"), then a live version that sounds about like their recent SNL performance, and finally a souped-up version ("Lost+") with additional effects and a hip-hop break with rapper Jay-Z. (I had to go to the coldplay web site to figure out who it is.)

This is an excellent show of why Coldplay continues to amaze and defy expectations. "Lost!" sounds very little like anything they've done before; it's a very rhythmically engaging track that can also be stripped down to its essentials and made to be a lovely piano ballad. The versions on this download are:
Lost! - the original album version
Lost? - the piano version
Lost@ - from the United Center in Chicago, IL
Lost+ - featuring a rap verse by Jay-Z over an extended bridge
The drums in "Lost@", to me, are more dynamic than the album version - check out how the grace notes on the snare completely change the feel of the entire bridge. I love that kind of stuff...

Okay, lets make up this crazy scenario where some people got shipwrecked on an island or something for so long that they had never heard of the band Coldplay (wait...now isn't there some TV show about that?)...I know...terrible attempt at a joke. But seriously, although wildly popular, there are those out there who might not realize Coldplay occasionally comes up with a song or two that is pretty darn good.

The song "Lost" is one of those. It is a great song no matter how you package it...there's absolutely nothing wrong with the original version.

But the stripped-down piano version of this song is breathtaking. If people only knew this existed (and maybe it soon will be out there easily accessible for most people to hear...I don't know), I guarantee you that a whole 'lotta' people...including every age group and those that have never heard a Coldplay song before...would fall in love with this amazing version.

Bared down to the soul of the song, a slightly in-the-distance piano provides the perfect background for Chris Martin's right-up-front and intimate vocal performance...you don't get that kind of emotional connection from the other versions.

So what's my point, you may be asking? Why not just review the individual piano version that you can download separately? Because it's hidden and would be difficult to locate on its own...if someone clicks on this maxi-single and just hears the preview of the piano version, that might be enough for them to feel this powerful rendition, even with the low-quality preview.

So my hope it that people will click on that blue and white box with the word "lost" on it and discover a magical song...five stars for that.
