Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A cuddly bear from the country who is lost in the big city and the gentle boy who helps him make an endearing duo in McPhail's latest Bear book. When the frightened bear tells the boy that there are trees and water where he lives, the well-meaning tyke tries to find the bear's home. The most likely spot in the city is the park, where the two have a grand time. But the bear realizes he's still lost, and after a trip to the library to peruse books and study a globe, the two board a bus to the forest. Once they arrive, the bear is relieved and happy, but now the boy is lost; and this time the kindly bear vows to help his new friend find his way home. Through his words and pictures, McPhail delivers important messages sweetly and subtly. His amiable characters have much to teach children about the give-and-take of friendship, and about the good that comes from reaching out to someone in need. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-- A great brown bear falls asleep inside a snack truck and awakes to find himself lost in the big city. A small boy comes to the rescue, helping him search for the bear's home--a place with trees and water. Their quest takes them around the city, and they end their day in the library where they "can find out anything." Success! The bear recognizes a picture of his home; a quick look at a map marks the spot. After a long ride on an outbound bus, boy and bear find themselves among the quiet, towering trees. As the grateful brown fellow disappears into the woods, the boy realizes that he is now lost, and the bear returns to help him find his home. The characters, introduced in The Bear's Toothache (Joy Street, 1972), will delight fans with their return. The splendid story will satisfy beginning readers who will find the text manageable; it also succeeds as a read-aloud. Splashed with full-color illustrations and enriched with tones of violet, the book has strong eye appeal. McPhail retains his characteristic style, but is generous with both color and shading, giving each frame a complete background. --Virginia E. Jeschelnig,

5.0 out of 5 stars We were lost in Boston, too!, November 18, 2003
This review is from: Lost! (Library Binding)
This is a GREAT book! My mother bought it for my 2 daughters after we all got lost in Boston. I have been reading this book to my oldest (age 3 1/2) daughter for over six months and neither she nor I have tired of it yet. The words flow well and the illustrations are beautiful! I just ordered 2 more books by the same author ("Sisters" and "Santa's Name book") for my two daughters. I anticipate that we all will enjoy them just as much!

5.0 out of 5 stars Someone is lost, boy or bear?, April 3, 2000
By
This review is from: Lost! (Library Binding)
This is a great book! And like so many of David McPhails books, it's worth buying the hardcover. Who's lost, the boy or the bear? A friendship develops while trying to find the way home. McPhail does a wonderful job covering the topic of being lost.
