4.0 out of 5 stars Dog lover
I really enjoyed this book. It is about a woman who inherits her aunts house and rescue kennels after her death. Dogs just have a way of bringing people together and this book proves it for sure. I highly recommend reading it especially if you like animals and books about friendship and starting over.

2.0 out of 5 stars dog person book
This was our book club book of the month. I am not a fan of romance novels. This one reminded me a bit of Danielle Steele book (the whole forumula of woman leaves the man to be on her own..then she finds love on her own terms) with the added bit about dogs and the "dog world" (I own dogs, but these people in the book seem really odd with their dog centered lives) This...

Finished this today and very much enjoyed it. Good story about dogs and the author captured their personalities very well, in addition to those of her characters. Would definitely recommend this one, especially if you like dogs.

Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts by Lucy Dillon
Contemporary Romance - March 1st, 2011
4 stars

Rachel is heart-broken and disillusioned. She has just had a break up with her boyfriend and lost her job. In addition, she inherited her aunt's house in the suburbs, a dog rescue operation, and a kennel full of unwanted strays including her aunt's border collie. When she goes to stay at her aunt's house to sort out the mess and attempts to sell the house, she ends up delaying her return to London. Before she knows it, she was staying indefinitely and getting more and more involved in the dog rescue...and the handsome vet that volunteers at the kennel.

Natalie and Johnny's marriage has hit a rough patch ever since they started trying for a baby. Despite their best efforts and countless tries, they remain childless. But the yearning for a child threatens to consume their marriage, Natalie decids to foster a dog for the kennel. Could Bertie, the basset hound salvage their marriage?

Meanwhile, Zoe, a single mother with two boys under ten, is recovering from her divorce. Bitter and angry, she is upset when her irresponsible ex-husband gives the kids a puppy. Now she was stuck with training Toffee and cleaning up after its mess, not to mention her own kids! But one thing leads to another and somehow Zoe finds herself meeting another dog owner, the handsome doctor Bill.

Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts is a fun and charming read that feels like an ensemble romantic comedy. It has the right amounts of `aww' moments sprinkled in and loveable characters. (Especially Bertie, the incorrigibly gluttonous Basset Hound, whose antics had me grinning from ear to ear.) The best part is that even though there is a large cast, all the characters feel realistic and relatable. The dogs are in this book act as supporting characters, but sometimes it feels like they steal the show!

Heartwarming and engaging, this book is like comfort food for the soul. If you like your romance light and full of touching moments, Lost Dogs and Lonenly Hearts is highly recommended for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Probably a great book....but......, November 15, 2011
By
Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts, starts out to be an interesting story, unfortunately, I missed the part where some important pages were left out of the review and the the story picked up again leaving me totally confused until I went back a couple of time reading the page numbers and finally seeing the subtle warning. To have left out these few pages is not going to spoil the story, it is only going to tick off the person who was going to buy the book before this little trick was pulled. Had you really wanted someone to be warned, you should have put a stop sign even the size of the numbers of the pages would do, just to let the reader actually see the disclaimer before they promise themselves to write the authors and publishers names down and watch for this dirty trick in the future. 5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book, well written with real characters and real life issues, October 23, 2011

This book was something of a revelation for me; the everyday life and problems of people / dogs can be as engaging and entertaining as romanticised stories about impossibly beautiful, young and passionate characters. I was captivated by this book. Yes. I am a dog person. But, that would not necessarilly make me go all soppy over a story about dogs and broken hearts. This book, and the story, got to me because of it's realism and fearlessness in tackling big, ugly, messy human issues like; adultery, motherhood, selfishness and the not always romantic side of relationships. Kids vomit, dogs chew up favourite shoes and sometimes people are not who or what you expected them to be, and sadly even dogs get caught up in our human duplicity ending up broken hearted themselves.

This story doesn't promise happy endings, but it does show people facing their own demons and finding a way forward that is positive and even uplifting. Will Nat and John get pregnant? Maybe, maybe not, but you are left with the impression that they will be a family irregardless of being parents to a baby or their lovely Bertie on his bassetthound own. From the main character, Rachel and her storyline dealing with the thorny issue of a married lover, a tetchy relationship with her mother, gaining understanding about her deceased Aunt, Dot's multifaceted life, unplanned pregnancy issues for older women and allowing the possibility of a new love to blossom; the author unashamedly allows real life to take on a magical tone that gives readers hope.

I loved this book, and was gripped by the possibilities of life and relationships; be they between humans or their dog companions.

Get this book. You'll not regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Fun Read, June 25, 2011
By
Pat Fordyce (NorthCarolina USA) - See all my reviews
This was a very "British" novel that was a lot of fun to read. A 40ish woman loses her job, her home and her man in a flash. Her only hope is to move to a rambling old house in the country she inherited from her aunt. The house and grounds are being used as a rescue dog kennel. There the fun begins!!!
The house has a mystery, and stories all it's own,not to mention the sub-plots. There is Zoe, single Mom of two very active boys, whose ex husband decides those two active boys need a puppy, one more to take care of. Natalie and Johnny, the young couple who wish for a baby, and have since they were teenagers in love forever.
The dogs and there antics are so much fun, and it's the kind of story that if you have to put it down for a while...your very eager to get back to it. The ending could have been wrapped up nice an tidy, but the author decides to take a different route.....and a very satisfying one! Would recommend..even if your not a dog person.

I won't rehash the information on plot since others have already done so. This book resonates with honest relationships between people and between people and their animals. I hope more books by this author become available in the Kindle store.
