5.0 out of 5 stars Great 70's Rock Music
I love all the REO albums that featured Mike Murphy. This was one of my all time favorite records back when I was in high school. I still enjoy this album. The songs are up beat and I think it's good party music. When Kevin got back into the band I was really disappointed, but I did get used to him. I'm not knocking Cronin, but I came to know REO with Murphy. I'm glad...

3.0 out of 5 stars What is the name of this band?
I didn't expect to be hearing Steely Dan here, but it sounds EXACTLY like a harder rocking Steely Dan. I do not want to listen to Steely Dan when I am trying to listen to REO Speedwagon. I want to hear REO with Kevin Cronin on lead vocals. This is not REO's finest cd, but it isn't horrible. If you want a GREAT REO album, get R.E.O. T.W.O., I cannot emphasize enough how...

5.0 out of 5 stars Their finest hour, April 10, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Lost in a Dream (Audio CD)
I had heard songs from the early albums before, but when I heard this one, I knew it was the best. Michael Murphy's voice is awesome, and the song they did with Sly Stone is amazing (YOU CAN FLY). Also, the title song is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Michael Murphy REO disc, February 13, 2008

This is one of my favorite REO albums so I totally disagree with the other reviews...songs like the mighty "Down By The Dam"...the long classic title track "Lost In A Dream" are REO classic's in my opinion. Throw in the smooth "Give Me A Ride (Roller Coster) the rockin' "Throw The Chains Away" and the rest of the songs that have a kind of funky bluesy rock vibe and this album is a winner. The album just has a great flow to it that makes you want to play it all the way through. I still like the great REO Speedwagon debut and REO "TWO" a little better but to me "Lost In A Dream" is one of REO's best.

5.0 out of 5 stars REO In Their PRIME!, March 11, 2005

Ya see, I always thought of REO's older material as the best. And when I say Old, I don't mean "Roll With The Changes", and "Take It On The Run", although that's fine too. But "Lost In A Dream" was The first record I had ever heard in my life. It will always be the best to me, no matter what critic trashes it for being too Doobie Brother like, and I mean, what's wrong with that anyway??? REO Speedwagon carries on today, but they aren't EVEN a shell of their former selves. In This 1974 LP, they were still finiding their groove, still crafting that sound that once was famous, but now is almost tiresome as Kevin Cronin Jams repackaged disk after repackaged disk down our already bloated earholes. They are currently in the studio now, finally giving the public a taste of something new, but without Richrath and Gratzer, [...] The Hits are great, and this album almost eclipses even those. I'm dying for it on CD. Just too high dollar. But...definitely worth it. A MUST have for the collection.

T.W.O., I cannot emphasize enough how great a cd it is. Buy this one for an alternative to Kevin's version of REO... Still the great piano playing and guitar work, without Kevin Cronin. Good job though for Mike Murphy to step in and rock out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best REO Album from the Murphy Years, March 22, 2007

I always liked early REO better then later. The production on the three Murphy REO records was softer then those that came before and after. It had a less gritty live feel to it..more "produced". That said I like the smoothness of these records and enjoy the vocals more then on any REO record except R.E.O./T.W.O. This record is very listenable from start to finish.

3.0 out of 5 stars Overshadowed by its predecessor..., August 31, 2001
This review is from: Lost in a Dream (Audio CD)
This album is overshadowed by the previous REO album, the much more powerful "Ridin the Storm Out." It is the second of three CD's with lead singer Mike Murphy (the third album, "This Time We Mean It" was never released on CD and is no longer available on vinyl or cassette). Murphy is a strong lead singer, but if you didn't like "Ridin'..." you won't like this either.

The tracks are not particularly memorable, except for the title track (also available on "Decade of Rock and Roll") and perhaps one or two others. I find when I listen to this CD that I gravitate toward track 2 "Throw the Chains Away", track 5 the title track, and track 10 "I'm feeling good."

The bottom line is this: of the 20 or so REO discs I own, this is the one that gets the least playing time. If you're an REO collector like me, you'd better get this one before it's completely out of print. If not, this is probably the last REO disc you'd want to buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Should have been titled "The Sly Stone band" (guest appearance by REO SPEEDWAGON ), July 10, 2005
This review is from: Lost in a Dream (Audio CD)
Sorry if I dont rave about this album...I have the vinyl version...as I also have the vinyl of "This Time We Really Mean It"....I absolutely refuse to pay some unreasonable amount that some jerkbag scalper rape artist is trying to hold you up for....Just because an album was cutout and is extremely rare...doesn't make it good or even desireable...

I particularly like LOST IN A DREAM...GIVE ME A RIDE, ROLLER COASTER and WILD AS THE WESTERN WIND...classic REO style...they should have rejected all the Sly Stone material completely....and added the remaining songs to the THIS TIME album...it would have made for a better single effort....Just because Sly Stone and company happened to be in the same studio recording thier album at the same time...was absolutely NO REASON to justify having them play on this album...surely REO wasn't hurting for ideas...that they had to invite these funkmeister in to doctor up their work. I dont even see any musical common ground here.

RECORD COMPANY...take note.....please reissue this album along with THIS TIME WE REALLY MEAN IT....so we cant add it to our collections...without getting raped in the process...

1.0 out of 5 stars REO at their worst, for collectors only!, September 4, 2004
By
Gitters (Allendale, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lost in a Dream (Audio CD)
Lost in a Dream is the second album with vocalist Mike Murphy. Lost in a Dream is probably one of their weakest albums. While REO is full of good musicians, they don't have very good songs on this one to show off their skills. This one's out of print for a reason, if you must have Lost in A Dream I'd try to find a cheap used LP or Cassette, because it's definitly not worth $40 or $50 dollars. This one if best forgotten.

2.0 out of 5 stars Forget Michael Murphy, September 21, 2007
This review is from: Lost in a Dream (Audio CD)
I have been a longtime REO fan....Way back when they played at a local high school dance...even before their debut LP hit the stores....Does anybody remember when Duke Tumatoe was playing lead guitar??? This was before Gary was brought in...After REO decided their best direction was rock.

Well...The 3 albums they did with Michael Murphy just proved that in addition to BLUES.....COUNTRY just wasn't their forte'.....They got lucky with Ridin the storm out....The next 2 albums had their moments....You could probably combine the good tracks off all 3 albums and make one good 50 minute album....and that's about it.

I saw this lineup...as I also did the first 3 before it....Murphy just lacked the kind of raw vocal prowess that Cronin demonstrated on TWO...I think REO was trying to segeway into the EAGLES market during the Murphy era....altho....they failed miserably...Lucky for them...Most of their fans remained faithful and remembered how great they sounded with Kevin fronting them..

I am very disgusted to see that the only cd's available are still fetching in upwards of $80.00....I scored sealed copies of the LOST and THIS TIME lp's..and have a copy of the STORM cd.....and burned the best tracks to a cd....80 minutes will about cover all the best these 3 albums have to offer.

For all you longtime fans....It was sure nice to experience the bands glory days..wasn't it??
