4.0 out of 5 stars High tide mark for Elegy Mk1, May 9, 2006
OK I'll admit it - I far prefer the vocals of Ian Parry who sang on later Elegy albums to Eduard Novinga, who sang on this one.

Despite that this is still a strong release.

Tunes such as Lost, Everything and Clean Up Your Act are downright tasty. The meaner Spirits (one of the tracks on their acoustic ep done with Ian Parry) certainly provides an edge to proceedings.

The Elegy mindset is here fully developed. Also fully in force is their musical assault, particularly the guitar work which is such a hallmark of this form of Euro metal. And the production job by Wolfgang Stach and Henk van der Laars is up to the task of allowing this release to breathe.

How far this version of Elegy could of gone I've no idea. But despite the fact I've given them both four stars, I'd have to say that if push came to shove then I'd grab the Parry era State of Mind first, and then explore backwards to this release.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great music, not so good vocals, February 23, 2005
By electricphase (Mexico City) - See all my reviews
Singer's Ed Hovinga's high pitched voice prevented me from rating Lost with 5 stars. He was eventually replaced by a much better singer (Ian Parry) in subsequent albums.

On musical terms, Elegy is undoubtedly one of the best in the power progressive genre, and this early album is proof of the band members' virtuosity. Well worth having.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Metal Is Alive And Well, December 8, 2004
This album produces a perfect balance of great melodies, great vocals, great lyrics and great guitar solos and riffs. Any true fan of classic Heavy Metal should own this album. It might take a few listens to really appreciate the work that must have gone into this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lost ?
I`m sure the guys in Elegy tried very hard on this CD to produce something mentionable, but I`m sorry to report that in my own opinion it fails to do so.
