Victorian Rock & Roll?,
By Charles A. Miller "Educating the entire plane... (Kings Mountain, NC, USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Lost & Found 2nd Edition (Audio CD)
I don't know what the hell I was looking for at Borders Books this afternoon, probably some sort of earth physics tome, but luckily I wound up in the alternative CD section, where my eye fell on Rasputina for the first time. Truth told, my eye fell on a promo sticker reading "Rockin-Cello," and upon closer scrutiny it turned out to be Rasputina. Never having heard of them before, but being a person of good faith in music, I made the purchase anyway. I needn't describe the contents of "The Lost and Found"---those of you who know Rasputina don't need another analysis of the sound, and it's difficult to accurately describe it to a virgin who's never heard Rasputina before. These are covers, to be sure, of some old rock standards, but Rasputina poses no threat to the integrity of the originals. Rather, Rasputina manages to reinvent the songs in such a way that... well, imagine if you dropped the sheet music of Led Zeppelin's "Rock & Roll" into a time portal and it was recovered sometime in the mid-19th Century by a chamber music society. A chamber music society prone to imbibing absinthe, let's say, and completely uninhibited when it came to interpreting Led Zeppelin using classical instrumentation. That's the sound, or as near as I can describe it, of Rasputina. I found it charming, inventive, and sexy, and I became an instant Rasputina fan---so much so that I ordered all of their available music after a few listens to "The Lost & Found"... The only real drawback to this CD is that it's less than a half-hour in length. So much for the theory that this isn't a good introduction to Rasputina---it's a great introduction.

I have first edition of this, not the second, but I have heard the new additions (Bad Moon Rising and Fire & Ice) several times live.Any cover has the potential to go horribly wrong, particularly when done on classical instruments, but Rasputina usually manages to pull them off nicely. They're particularly effective on the slower and more soulful songs, such as "Wish You Were Here" and "Bad Moon Rising", which Melora claims is her "favorite song about the weather", and is done in a slower, more melancholy fashion than the original. I think it's a very pleasant reworking, and I even prefer it to the original (but I am, admittedly, not a huge CCR fan). My favorite song on the EP is probably Tourniquet, which is a very effective reworking. It uses drum programming to capture some of the industrial flavor of the original, but without any sense of aggression. The big rock songs are a lot of fun and come off fairly well, I think. They have a certain wry sense of humor and if you can appreciate that, then you're sure to like them. Three Little Piggies is cute at first, but can wear a little thin on repeat listens. As with any covers, if you hold the originals in near sacred regard, then you probably won't enjoy this little album very much. But if you like quirky reworkings and enjoy a good cello rock song, then give it a shot. It's not the best starting point, if you're a new fan, but if you're an established fan of Rasputina, then it is definitely worth picking up. Now, if only they'd record their cover of the Pretenders' "I Go To Sleep"...

I'm not really a huge fan of Rasputina. Other than "Lost & Found", I own "How to Quit the Forest" and that I wasn't really wild about. Still I was intrigued by their covers EP "Lost & Found". Thankfully I got lucky today and found a copy of "Lost & Found" in the used cd bins at my favorite cd store. Much to my surprise, I found myself enjoying every second of "Lost & Found". I found the vocals nowhere as annoying as I have in the past. As much as I loathe Marilyn Manson's music, I found Rasputina's version of "Tourniquet" quite enjoyable to listen to. That is probably because I could actually hear the lyrics. It was really interesting when Rasputina turned the old nursery rhyme of "The Three Little Pigs" be turned into a song. My favorite tracks were the covers of CCR's "Bad Moon Rising" and Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were here". All the songs on this 24 minute EP was very good tto say the very least. I wish Rasputina did a few more songs to make it a full-length album but still, it did made me a fan out of the band and for that I thank Rasputina for changing my mind about them.

I've never been a very big fan of Rasputina's music (and I'm still not) but this 2nd Edition EP contains some great Gothic Rock tunes! I'm not familiar with most of the originals but these gals kick some major butt in their trademark corsets, covering songs from the legendary Pink Floyd ("Wish You Were Here") to CCR ("Bad Moon Rising") to Marilyn Manson ("Tourniquet") to Pat Benatar ("Fire & Ice") as they blend together dark, heavy guitar riffs with haunting/wailing cellos like you've never heard them before. And if you think that's absurd, wait until you hear their morbid take of a children's nursery rhyme on "This Little Piggy"... Rasputina is definitely an acquired taste but if you never cared for them in the past you just might be surprised with this one. And if you've always liked them than rest assured; this will not disappoint. I do, however, wonder... Where can I find the 1st Edition?

A must buy if you "get" Rasputina...,

This is an EP of nothing but covers. Rasputina has done many covers (and done them well) on previous albums, but this collection, while wonderful, wears thin at times. I mean, a cover of Fire and Ice by Pat Benatar? Gak... To the Rasputina neophyte: DO NOT START HERE! Listen to the albums first, then if you decide you're a fan, then and only then, buy this. To be fair, I don't regret buying this one bit. I giggled non-stop throughout it the first time through, and you haven't lived 'till you've heard Rasputina cover a Floyd or Zeppelin tune. There's just something deliciously subversive about it. Highly recommended to Rasputina or Richard Cheese fans.

i never listen to this kinda of music if it is called "goth" if we MUST label it...But somehow...i think this band are different from goth genre..would it be silly to call them a modern "the slits"? if you have heard the Slits, you might have found some similiarities... when i came across this band, i hated them, but now...i love them. They are soo magical and hypnotising with their weirdness. any one who listens to music way beyond the mainstream will love this whether they are a goth, punk, indi kid, emo kid whatever. i can't be too sure of it, because this music is not for everyone. but i'm sure, that anyone who has started liking them, feels like they have been introduced to a new...universe...of Rasputina... the state of modern music now is horrible...and especially the state of modern goth music. i myself only like old goth bands (sisters of mercy, siouxsie and the banshees, bauhaus, the cure etc.)but Rasputina give goth music some hope. i really do hope that they become influential for new bands in the future...people need to start buying their albums quick...so they become famous QUICK! or is it just nice to wonder in the darkness where no one knows you? hmm...tough choice.

It's pretty much what I wanted...an album of cover songs played by a celioist. I enjoy a lot of stuff from Rasputina, so I wasn't too worried about this album. I do wish there had been a few more songs on there (like Barracuda). Also, the 3 little pigs song was a bit odd to hear mixed in with covers from all these great artists.
Overall, really good album. If it would have had a few more tracks I would have given it 5 stars.

The collection has some interesting gems, including This Little Piggy, but otherwise is "meh, just okay." I wish Rasputina would have included Heart's Barracuda in the collection.

My introduction to Rasputina was through the strange "Hunter's Kiss" from the 12 Tales compilation. And while I did/do enjoy the song, I wasn't wild about it; however, their quirky sound was oddly appealing to me. I knew I would eventually check them out but I also knew it would be a while before I did that. (Or so I thought...) Fate intervened while I was roaming my favorite record store when I saw 'Lost & Found 2nd Edition' on display at a CD listening booth. One of the ear pieces was busted but after listening to what I could hear of "Bad Moon Rising" I bought it without thinking twice. I took this home and rocked out to it over and over again. The running time is disappointing, clocking in at a measly 24 minutes, but Rasputina apparently enjoys putting out EPs instead of full length albums. I'm not familiar with any of the originals but these gals kick some major butt covering songs in tight corsets (imagine that!) from Pink Floyd ("Bad Moon Rising") to CCR ("Wish You Were Here") to Marilyn Manson ("Tourniquet") to a children's nursery rhythm on "This Litte Piggy" as they blend in Goth melodies (dark, heavy guitar riffs) with haunting grace (beautiful cellos). I'm still a little wary and reluctant on buying anything else by Rasputina but, whether you're a fan or not, this EP is definitely worth checking out - if only for the first three songs. |
