Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The author has done a good job with his first novel, a thriller that begins as 6-year-old Mamie sees her adored 11-year-old brother, Sherman, fire a bullet into his brain. Amazingly, Sherman survives, but Mamie's relief turns to puzzlement at the peculiar glint in his eyes. He sets fire to their home, leaving Mamie orphaned and in the hospital, but his plans to "rescue" his sister and keep her all to himself are thwarted when a compassionate woman attempts unsuccessfully to adopt Mamie and finally kidnaps her from the hospital seconds before Sherman himself comes to take her away. Thus begins a murderous cross-country pursuit in which Sherman and his vicious mongrel, the Chinaman, terrorize the bewildered woman and three children who eventually accompany her. Although several points are never satisfactorily explained, Lost is nevertheless a suspenseful, frightening tale.A.M.B. Amantia, Population Crisis Committee Lib., Washington, D.C.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost Is Very Much responsible for my life long reading habit, February 27, 2003

Gary I know that you are dead but I just want to thank you for all that you have done for me. I found your book in the library in high school when our reading teacher began to make it manditory for us to read a 300 plus page book and do a report on it every six weeks. I was in very much distress having thought that a totally impossible feat. At that time 300 pages might has well been 3,000 it was just as unrealistic. I was 16 or 17 then and she took the class to the library and I began the grissy work of trying to find the small book that I could get away with something with picture. I found your book "Lost". I was floored. I had no idea that reading a book could give me so much pleasure and excitement. My whole behavior pattern changed then. My eyes were opened. I began to read everything in sight. I am now 24 and I have read hundreds of books History, Technical Manuals, Literature, Science, Phiosolgy. Gary you helped bring about this way of life that I and my children enjoy now. You could not have known that that little pulp fiction novel would transform a young boy and vastly improve his options and oppurtunity for him and all of his descendants. Thank You God Bless You. I have your Book On the Shelf and memorial to that most pivotal point in my life. Love You. My family and wife thanks You. I would not even know her or have had a chance with her or even be happy with her. My children will read and get an education and will read for answers in life. From my heart thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!, January 18, 1999

I first read this book when it came out. Months later, I couldn't find a copy to buy! I was finally able to get one from a used bookstore, and it was definitely worth the search!

This is not like your typical thriller/horror books -- it's much better! I was so happy to see that Gary Devon has written a third book -- I was worried that LOST and BAD DESIRE (another good one, although I liked Lost better) were it!
