More About the Author

I spent the first half of my professional life as an artist and gradually shifted into the realm of writing over the past two decades. After years of trial and error, my novel "River of Summer" (a romance) was published by Penguin-Putnam in 1999. Eleven months later my novel "Without Mercy" (a mystery) was published by NAL Dutton in 2000. All right! I thought to myself. I am HOT! I am ON FIRE! Two book contracts in one year, and a movie deal in the works.

Then I wrote a book that didn't sell. I wrote another book that didn't sell. It took several years -- and oh, maybe a hundred rejections -- for me to find my bearings again as a storyteller. "Returning to Taos" was published by Five Star in 2006, and "Lost in the Gila" (an archaeological thriller) was published by Five Star in February 2009.

My travails in learning how to write all over again and then finding a publisher for my work led me to start "You Can Get Published," a web-based developmental editorial service at www.loisgilbert.com.

My novels have been translated into several languages, and I've lectured on creative writing around the world for Norwegian Cruise Line. I've evaluated manuscripts for University of New Mexico Press, and was a featured speaker for the 2009 New Mexico Women Author's Book Festival. My motto? Life is good. It's never too late to learn, and it's never too late to re-invent yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Won over on every page, February 25, 2009
This review is from: Lost in the Gila (Five Star First Edition Mystery) (Hardcover)
I loved the physical backbone of this book: the archaeology, the forensics, the completely plausible notion that the last king of Teotihucán could have traveled north with his retinue to leave monumental evidence of his empire in the Gila Wilderness of New Mexico. The history rings true, as do the struggles ripping apart the members of Adam Richter's expedition to excavate the treasures that must be buried somewhere close. Kate Donovan, the forensics expert, is that woman we all cheer for, the one who can't always control her emotions, her outrage, her judgment of fools. On this dig she comes up against some clever and unrelenting enemies, and the odds are stacked against her. The plot twists and turns, but my interest in Kate never dims. I'm not sure how to categorize this book--as mystery, thriller, romance, or literary drama--but the compelling, clear writing never stumbles, and wins me over on every page. A great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost in the Adventure, May 1, 2009
This review is from: Lost in the Gila (Five Star First Edition Mystery) (Hardcover)
Lost in the Gila by Lois Gilbert is wonderful. You take a brilliant forensic anthropologist with uncanny instincts, mix in a set of dysfunctional and dangerous co-workers and you have a wild ride into the New Mexico wilderness. This story took me places I would never dare to visit and brought me face to face and breath to breath with danger and the unknown. I was completely exhausted and exhilarated by the end. A must read! Brava Miss Gilbert.
