About the Author

G.A. Henty (1832-1902) was a prolific author and journalist in the 19th century. Drawing on his experience and knowledge as a war correspondent, Henty was a master of weaving history into his fictional stories about courageous young men living in difficult times marked by military conflict. His stories provide insight into some of the greatest conflicts of history while introducing the reader to characters that embodied the values of integrity, duty and virtue. While aimed at older children and teens, even adults will enjoy his writings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun with good morals February 3, 2013
By Hannah
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Wealthy Hilda can read lips, as can her best friend, secretly-deaf Netta. When Hilda's guardian mysteriously dies and his heir is kidnapped, the two girls use their lip-reading skill to find the boy and restore him to his place.

I read this book at least five times when I was a young teenager. I enjoyed the mystery, the historical setting, and the excitement, but most of all the fascinating art of lip-reading and what the girls were able to do with it. Though some parts of the book were quite sad, such as when Hilda's guardian dies, other parts are hilariously funny, and there are good characters and morals throughout.

Some parts can be a little slow, and Henty does try to put some history in which, though well done, could be boring to some.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Henty book I ever read! December 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It was the best Henty book I ever read, and I have enjoyed a lot of them. It had more mystery than the other ones I have read. I would recommend it to boys age 10 to 15 yrs. of age.

4.0 out of 5 stars an outstanding plot March 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Someone ought to turn this into a movie. Unlike all the other Henty stories I've read, this novel doesn't weave a fictional character into a highly accurate historical narrative. Instead, this a pure "who done it" mystery, with a great plot, that's supported by a cast of interesting characters. The writing is stilted and maybe difficult to read for some, due to being written with prose that's long been out of style for readers in 2014, but it's nonetheless a good yarn that's every bit worth the effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Henty's best February 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Unlike most Henty books, in The Lost Heir the heroine is a girl, and her friend is deaf. But they have a secret ability: the ability to read lips. With this power, the girls must uncover the author of a wicked kidnapping and murder...before it's too late!

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of The Lost Heir May 22, 2013

I chose this rating because the story seemed a little hard to follow at times. However it kept my attention to the end with surprises as I read along. I enjoy the ability of Henty to keep my interest even when the story tell everyday activities.
