Book Description

You are on safari in Africa, but when you step out of the truck to take photos of a Giraffe, the vehicle accidentally takes off without you. Now you are on your own.

The Serengeti National Park isn't a safe place. There are hyenas, cheetah and lions out here ... lots of lions. You wanted to see animals up close and now you're getting your wish as you try and find your way back to civilization.

This is an interactive story for ages nine and up. At the end of each chapter you will need to choose your path wisely if you are going to avoid getting eaten by lions and make it back to your family.
Other interactive stories from The Fairytale Factory include:
Pirate Island, In the Magician's House, and Once Upon an Island.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Ripping Yarn, However You Choose to Proceed June 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I first came to D.M. Potter's and Blair Polly's "Choose You Own Adventure" books by way of Potter's "In the Magician's House", which is one of the four books, (currently), in the series. That is a lushly written and deeply atmospheric book that puts the lie to any suspicion that you can't write an elegant magical fantasy book for kids. "Lost in Lion Country" is stylistically very different, but it is just as satisfying in different ways.

First off, I should say that while some "Choose Your Own Adventure" books can be gimmicky, with more attention paid to the novelty of multiple story options than the actual story, characters or writing, this book does not fall in to that trap. The option of making choices that lead you through the book adds some novelty, and helps to engage the reader in the overall reading experience, but it is the actual adventure that really sustains interest.

Here, our hero is never named. Our hero is "you". This is emphasized by the narrator's use of the second person singular throughout the book. "You" do this and then "you" do that. When used properly, as it is here, I think this adds a detached tone and yet an immediacy, to any narrative. "You" are there, right now. You must make decisions.

"You" have been left behind in the middle of the Serengeti by your tour bus, and you have to survive and find your way to safety. At the end of each chapter you are presented with a choice between two options. POSSIBLE MILD SPOILERS. As a general rule one choice is a bit more sensible than the other. You can take the apparently safest course at each decision point, (i.e. always turn left at the corner of the maze), or the the riskiest course, (turn right), or you can mix it up.

You are on the Serengeti and get out to take a photo of a giraffe. The next thing you notice is the Land Rover containing the rest of your tour group racing off after a pride of lions leaving you in a rather precarious position. With the hyenas on your tail, your first decision is either to climb a tree or hide from view in a dry creek bed. Which will be your choice? How will it turn out? Will you ever make it back to the Lodge? What adventures/people/animals will you encounter before that? Will you meet the paleontologist?

This was a very enjoyable and informative read. Our 11 year old son made all the "right" choices the first time through so he was excited. We also learned a lot about the different animals and the Maasai etc.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED from our house to yours!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Polly/Potter collaboration March 10, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The text offers another exciting adventure in a situation you've probably fantasized about being in, but will probably never get the chance to experience in real life. The sharp prose keeps the pace of the work moving along quickly, making it an engaging read for those young and old.

I’m really enjoying these choose your own path books. This one is an awesome adventure set on a safari in Africa with the reader becoming stranded and making the right choice is integral to your survival. Better choose wisely if you want to make it home! So much fun!
