4.0 out of 5 stars "Band of Gold" and Most of Freda Payne's Best Album to Date, November 7, 2000
This review is from: Lost in Love (Audio CD)
Freda Payne started as a teenage jazz singer in the 60s and was courted by Berry Gordy to record for Motown, but her mother said no. When she got a little older, she signed to Invictus, the label Holland and Dozier started when the legendary songwriting/producing team left Gordy's stable, and immediately scored a global hit with "Band of Gold," which is the first track on this fine CD. Although Payne had a string of hits for Invictus, "Band" is the only one here, as the remaining 9 cuts come from her 2 LPs for ABC, 8 of which are from her best album to date, "Out of Payne Comes Love." This is jazzy supper club r&b produced like a Rufus set and highlights Payne's most adventurous and affecting vocal, especially on the swingin' title cut, forlorn "(See Me) One Last Time," exuberant "I Hear Rumors" and triumphant "Look What I Found." I remember seeing Freda lipsync the first single from this album, the seductive and insinuating "You," on "American Bandstand" way back when. She covers Stevie Wonder, Ashford and Simpson and Evie Sands as if the songs had been written with her in mind. Freda has done a lot of good, chunky work over the years, but to date, this is her finest moment, especially cuts 2-9, which all hail from the "Out of Payne" project.

4.0 out of 5 stars Out of Payne comes Love, March 21, 2000
This review is from: Lost in Love (Audio CD)
Though this contains her most famous Invictus hit "Band of Gold", other songs are from her ABC recordings. After she left Invictus, she recorded 2 albums for ABC "Payne & Pleasure ('74)" "Out of Payne comes Love('75)". Actually 8 songs on this CD are from the latter which is my favorite one of hers (only "Run for your life" is from the former). She showed more versatile & mature singing style, especially her jazz backgroud. You can hear the strong Jazz influence everywhere on this CD. I definitely appereciate this release though the art work is awfull and the sound quality is only so so, you will enjoy this CD if you are fan of her or you enjoy '70s Ladies of Soul or the music like Nancy Wilson's. All songs and her performance are strong, mature, sophisticated and brilliant. Get this and program your player, 8-6-9-3-7-4-2-5 which is original order of "Out of Payne comes Love".

5.0 out of 5 stars An All Time Favorite, April 20, 2000
By
This review is from: Lost in Love (Audio CD)
I just found out this fantastic record is now on CD. Before I had my own CD recorder I paid $25.00 to have a local studio transfer my LP to CD! That's how much I loved this album. I purchased a second copy & never play it to keep it clean for taping or making a CD out of it! There are two gems in particular here. One is a Stevie Wonder composition "Seems So Long" that I am not aware of anyone else ever recording. What a classic! Then there's the gorgeous but sad (See Me) One Last Time. Get out the hankies! My only complaint is why this collection deleted a third gem "Million Dollar Horse" in favor of "Run For Your Life." All in all, I'm delighted to have one of my all time favorite albums of ANYONE's (not just Freda's) available on CD. If you like R&B with a jazzy slant don't miss this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Out of Payne is Here, July 6, 2004

"Out of Payne Comes Love" was the best Freda Payne LP ever, released in the seventies. It was never released on CD until now-it took putting her smash hit "Band of Gold" as the first song to entice listeners. The original LP is the best music from Payne there is- "I Hear Rumors" is her finest musical moment-ever!
This CD is worth every penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, June 26, 2000
This review is from: Lost in Love (Audio CD)
Having been a Freda Payne fan all of my life, believe me when I say this album a musical masterpiece. Freda has recorded for impluse(her first album.) jazz. She of course recorded for invictus, abc and capital and the lady cannot record trash, its just not possible. my personal favorites are 'The easiest way to fall' I shall not be moved. ' Sav'in it' 'Seems so long' The unhooked generation and 'Sweet pumpkin' I have only one problem with Ms. Payne, that she has not recorded enough albums Artist like this lady don't come along every day. Thank god for Freda Payne

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional!, April 19, 2000

I never heard any material of Freda's after Invictus so this cd (with the exception of Band of Gold) is new to me. Love it! No matter what this woman does she does it well, with style and class. My favorites - Look What I Found, Run for Your Life and Keep it Coming (to me this song has a bit of a country tinge to it! ) A great cd by a great performer. I had the pleasure of seeing Freda with Melba Moore live in Atlantic City in January and what a show it was!

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)

Freda Payne possesses one of the greatest voices in pop/jazz music history and this magnificent singer is a good example of being born too late as she would have knocked them all off the charts in the forties & fifties as this legendary lady can really sing! Early chart hits were impressive and the live performances of these chart toppers always stunning as Freda opens up that great voice even more in concert until 1975 when Miss Payne went in studio to lay down the tracks for "Out Of Payne Comes Love" did it become apparent that Freda Payne is around at the top of the list of all-time greatest singers and she pours her heart & soul into each great song with a voice that defies description making each song uniquely her own. Sadly & strangely "Out Of Payne Comes Love" has yet to be released in original form on CD but "Lost In Love" does contain all but one song from that blazing classic which should be released in original form with exotic cover photos which are dramatic & gorgeous with a dash of sultry plus the missing sublime track "Million Dollar Horse" is a five plus minute epic gem that should not be missed by any real music lover...state of the art remastered sound is a must for a brilliant work such as "Out Of Payne Comes Love" and if bonus tracks exist this would be a must as anything from this ultimate session is essential. A tremendous version of a Stevie Wonder gem "Seems So Long" has got to be one of the most extraordinary covers of a Wonder song ever and Freda turns this sublime passionate ballad in to a cool & exotic timeless classic containing a vocal so brilliant that it would be heavenly if Freda would record a complete collection on Stevie Wonder songs...another classic to be sure!!! Songs are a great mix and the title song for this collection "Lost In Love" is a hypnotic jazz tinged gem that shows a lost opportunity not having this peerless singer record a complete jazz collection as nobody around quite does it like this..."Out Of Payne Comes Jazz" would be a winner but for now the original form of "Out Of Payne Comes Love" remastered would be spectacular. Bravo Freda Payne!!!

"Out of Payne Comes Love" was Freda Payne's best album, and it's great to have most of it on C.D. (but why not just issue the album as it was?). Very mature, jazzy, intelligent music you will love.
