Plenty of great interviews from your favourite characters,

This review is from: Lost: Messages from the Island: The Best of The Official Lost Magazine (Paperback)
Lost: Messages from the Island is a selection of the best stories from Lost: The Official Magazine. This book is really all about interviews with the various cast, producers, directors and production crew of Lost. It covers only the first two seasons so there's nothing on Ben and Juliet yet. It does however include the majority of the 16 powerhouse cast, like Jack, John, Sawyer, Kate, Hurley, Michael, Mr. Eko and many more. If you're looking to find out about the secrets of the island, you probably won't learn anything new compared to watching the show. Instead, the interviews here have the actors talk about their experience of acting in Lost and their interactions with other actors. There's plenty to read on their thoughts about the plot and chemistry between characters. You'll find out that they know as little of the plot prior to shooting, just as the audience prior to watching. The more interesting things to read about are how wonderful it is to shoot in Hawaii, where actors have moved in to stay during production. It's like a dream job excluding the insect bites in the jungle. With the production crew, they reveal how their shoot their scenes and create props like the Black Rock -- from Styrofoam. If you're not a subscriber of the magazine, this book is a very attractive alternative to catch up on the happenings behind the scenes. The photography and layout design are really beautiful. Lost fans will find the value well worth the price, costing less than 2 issues of the magazine. (More pictures are available on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

For anyone who's even a casual fan of the show, this Best Of collection of the Official Lost Magazine is chock full of swirling theories, genuinely interesting making-of tidbits, and easter eggs from the show which when pointed out to you will make you laugh out loud in anticipation for the upcoming final season. Honestly though, I would be hard pressed to find ANYONE labeling themselves a "casual fan" of Lost, because the storyline and mythology is admittedly pretty dense, so you've either been following from the beginning (catching up on DVD counts!) or you gave up seasons ago. Having said that, if you're even LOOKING at this page, you owe it to yourself as a FAN of this incredible piece of serialized television GOLD to get in on the fun. My favorite thing about this? It's a best of, as I've said, but it sets its sights solely around the issues during season 2 and building up anticipation for season 3. It's like a time capsule of theories past, which makes it fun to remember where the show was, and if you're all caught up through the finale of season 5, you know that things are beginning to come full circle, making even the most mundane clues from the first 2 seasons now seem vitally important... maybe, lol. My only hope is that they don't stop there, as in, give us a season 3 Best Of, and 4, and 5, and then the final one I would assume... and once it's all done, the company should just hire some writers to turn Lostpedia into an actual hardbound encyclopedia as well, with all the extra information that just couldn't fit into the TV show, that would be great! In the meantime, this is a great (and surprisingly THICK and GLOSSY) well-produced piece of memorabilia.

Nice book with good articles & photos. My only complaint is there's nothing about Desmond & no photos of him. This is a great show that will be truly missed. Good to have materials like this to reflect back on. Fun behind-the-scenes goodies & photos.

This book is a must-have for Lost fans, and it is very inexpensive for the value of the product. If you already own the official Lost Magazine issues, then there is really nothing new in this book - everything was taken directly from the magazine. But for those who did not get the Lost Magazine, this is a great substitute because it contains the best articles from the magazine.
As you would expect, "Lost: Messages From the Island" contains interviews with all the main cast members, including Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Terry O'Quinn, Jorge Garcia, and Josh Halloway. There is also a foreword by writers/showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. But we also get to hear from the Director of Photography, a couple of episode directors, and a production designer. The book features a ton of images, including official production photos, candid shots from the set, storyboards, and art department drawings. It should be noted that this book covers only Seasons 1 and 2 of the show, so it does not represent the complete series. For a more complete (and more expensive) book on all things Lost, try this: Lost Encyclopedia Overall, this book looks like it's worth a lot more than it is actually being sold for. I was very surprised at how high-quality is was when it arrived. The articles are thoughtful and give interesting insight into the making of the show. I've uploaded some pictures in the customer images section, so be sure to take a look.

Messages from the Island is a compilation of the best articles from Lost: The Official Magazine, primarily for the first two seasons. Everything is shown in full color, and the illustrations are excellent. The subject matter includes interviews with the cast and key production people, descriptions of locations, limited analysis of some plot points, and a lot of good photography. I believe that any fan of Lost would find the book to be interesting, and you certainly gain an insight into the thoughts of the cast as they explain how they tried to understand their characters with almost no guidance outside of the scripts they were given. None of the cast had any idea where things were headed. Of course, that is also true for the viewers of the series.
If you are a fan of Lost, give Messages from the Island a try.

More than I expected,

"Messages from the island" is just what doctor ordered for those who has missed all the first Lost official magazine issues. Especially for those who lives in some countries where it is impossible to buy such a magazine in the bookstore (I mean any issue, not this particular one). "Messages" cover a period of the two first seasons (which are the best ones to my mind) and provide all the best experience from the original magazines, though with superior polygraphy. Since there are only two seasons inside, I hope to see someday as great compillation of the seasons three and four as we have been given with the "Messages"!
