5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Gentle, Caring, and Informative
I am the webowner of "Borderline Personality Disorder Today".

Finally I got a copy of Dr. Moskovitz's book "Lost in the Mirror," I sat down and cried shortly into the first chapter. It was the very first time that someone understood me and not only that, it was as if the author had his arm around me through the entire book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Valuable for those who know very little, but not as helpful for those looking for further insight.
I bought this book after reading the good reviews. It's worth noting that I've also read all of the other books on BPD that are geared toward those afflicted with BPD and their family, as well as many academically-inclined books, intended for professionals. Perhaps it's because of my exposure that I found this book uninformative. It's easy to read, and Dr. Moskovitz...

Finally I got a copy of Dr. Moskovitz's book "Lost in the Mirror," I sat down and cried shortly into the first chapter. It was the very first time that someone understood me and not only that, it was as if the author had his arm around me through the entire book.

Lost in the Mirror is so beautifully and gently written and it was also the first time that I realized that I was not miserable because I was a bad person which is what I had always thought.

The magic of "Lost in the Mirror" is the mixture of the tremendous clinical experience and knowledge the author has (he is up to date with the research), with his very gentle, warm and caring personality.

I have heard from many family members how helpful this book has been for them.

Dr. Moskovitz brings you right up to date with his second edition in regards to treatment. He discusses the latest about psychotropic medication, EMDR and DBT.

It is important to know that the BPD is treatable and that you can get better.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellant Read for Troubled Souls, June 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Lost in the Mirror: An Inside Look at Borderline Personality Disorder (Paperback)
When I was first informed that I had been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder I was angry, really angry. I had also previously been told that I had Dissociative Identity Disorder, and I was confused as to how I could suffer from both. My doctor asked me to read his copy of this book so that I could get a better understanding of what BPD was and was not. As I read this book I became confused. Confused because I felt like the author had written it about me. Over time I came to realize and accept the diagnosis and finally work through the confusing and troubled personality styles that make up what is known as BPD. I came to see that this book was written about and for the many others in this world, not just me, who suffer from BPD and have a glimmer of hope to heal from it. I found the chapter Dr. Moskovitz wrote about DID was very loosly written in it's connection with BPD. With my own experience of healing from both disorders, I found that they are truely seperate from each other and yet are linked by some shared features such as the ability to dissociate. I felt comforted and hopeful that I could heal from both DID and BPD after reading this chapter. Through the reading of this book I learned more about myself and my effect on others and began to see how I needed to change me and not those around me. I thank Dr. Moskovitz for the writings and teachings he offers clients and families, known and unknown to him, and the hope of healing that he gives to all. This book is one of the better reads on the topic of Borderline Personality Disorder and I recommend it to all who want a better understanding of what the disorder is, and is not.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Breakthrough for BPD's Who've Been Told They Can't Heal, November 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Lost in the Mirror: An Inside Look at Borderline Personality Disorder (Paperback)
As both a clinical social worker and someone living with BPD, I recommend this book to people all the time. There are a lot of writings out there that make BPD seem like a hopeless diagnosis: This is NOT one of those books. By using both a clinical and narrative approach, this author has captured BPD in an accessible manner that is absent in other BPD books.

Excellent for people living with BPD and their families.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Is a Gift to the World, April 7, 2003

I discovered LOST IN THE MIRROR three weeks ago. For the first time in my life I am reading someone else's words about borderline and exclaiming, 'Yes, that is what I've had to deal with all these years!' Had I known about this book in 1998, I might not have overdosed for the third time. After seventeen years of therapy I now live a healthy life. Still, LOST IN THE MIRROR has things to teach me. Through it, I'm developing a deeper understanding of how and why I respond and react to intimate relationships with all-or-nothing thinking. I am learning about dissociation. To anyone living with borderline personality disorder, and their families and friends, please know that there is a way out. LOST IN THE MIRROR can help you find it. ...

5.0 out of 5 stars I finally have found some answers, April 24, 2000

This is an excellent book for anyone who has BPD or for family members and friends of those with BPD. I was recently diagnosed with the disorder. When I first learned that I had it, I was in complete denial and thought that I was crazy and that there was no one else out there like me who felt the things that I feel. I was shocked to read Lost in the Mirror and see that there ARE others out there like me. It gave me such a huge sense of relief. I have read the book 3 times in 2 weeks just for re-confirmation. I have even used the book while in therapy. It puts feelings that I have had into words that even helped my therapist understand me a little better. The book helped me to understand why I am the way I am and that there is hope. A GREAT READ!

Moskovitz writes with a warm and gentle tone, although this sense of understanding and empathy borders on justifying inappropriate behaviors at times. I do agree that this book is great for those who have just been diagnosed and aren't sure what to make of it. It's also great for partners and family who also may not be sure what to think of the disorder, not necessarily what to do or how to respond to certain behaviors. Basically, I'd consider it an appropriate introduction to BPD, and for that reason I give it 3 stars. The reason I don't rate it any higher is because I think there are other books on the market that are more informative, just as easy to understand, but much less coddling.

If you're familiar with the disorder and are looking for further insight, on the other hand, this would not be the book I'd suggest.

4.0 out of 5 stars good resource, April 24, 2003
By

I read this book after being 'officially' diagnosed with BPD. I found it extremely easy to read with short chapters and good examples of real people. I didn't like the rather simplistic approach to medications and treatment options and the assumption that recovery without a professional is impossible. I think a bit more about how to help oneself in recovery would have been very nice.

I recommend it for Borderlines as well as significant others and loved ones of Borderlines.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit extreme in its discussion., August 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Lost in the Mirror: An Inside Look at Borderline Personality Disorder (Paperback)
I am a "high-functioning" BPD; nowhere did I even find the term in this book! I am a victim of neglect, which can be more devastating than abuse, as its cause and results are so nebulous and hard to pin down; I did not find anything about neglect in this book.

What I was looking for was a real discussion of how a person with BPD actually feels from day to day; why do the "paranoias" set in, and how do they differ from actual, delusional paranoia? What I got was an interesting case study of a person with extreme BPD: lost time, multiple suicide attempts, etc. Though I accept that is part of the picture of BPD, it is NOT me . . . I did find the book somewhat helpful, but am reading the Stop Walking on Eggshells book which is designed for family member of BPDs and already finding it more practical.

3.0 out of 5 stars Emotionally relieving - little practical application, April 12, 2001
By A Customer
i'm only half-way through this book, but every time i pick it up i feel a tremendous sense of release. as someone who has been diagnosed with bpd i find this book very comforting, as the author is immeasurably kind in describing the borderline personality. as another reader has said, this book provides an excellent (though contrived and somewhat patronizing) overview of extreme bpd but does not address less-extreme, more functional forms of the illness. i would recommend this book for people who are suffering from bpd and are looking for a compassionate and soothing voice, though not for bpd's looking for practical behavior modifying skills and/or bpd's looking to start treatment.

This review is from: Lost in the Mirror: An Inside Look at Borderline Personality Disorder (Paperback)
Having recently been diagnosed with BPD, I ran out to find information about it. This was the first book I came across. I began reading it and for the first time I started to really understand myself. I found so many answers to questions I wasn't even aware that I had. This book took me on a journey of self-discovery and understanding from which I have emerged much better equipped to deal with the challenges that BPD brings to my life. Wonderful and informative without being boring or condescending. I recommend this to all people with BPD and their friends and families.
