A children's book for adults!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Lost Princess (Hardcover)
An insightful look below the surface of two souls that look a lot like us. Modern ideas of self-importance being instilled as a virtue are skewered, and humility and obedience are offered as antidotes. Either you love MacDonald, or you hate him, for his books are not easy to read... as they are not about somebody else. Horn (above) did not like the sermonizing, but these were the best bits in our opinion.

A children's book that relates deeply to any reader,

This book was the first book in a college course called 'Violence and Grace' So true, the title of this course, for the book as well. MacDonald has a magical story-telling ability that impacted the writtings of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien, and this is a great book to introduce you to his masterful writtings. If this is the same copy I bought, the artwork is beautifully complimentary as well. I HIGHLY suggest this book to people of EVERY reading ability and personality.

'The Lost Princess' is unpredictable and delightful.,

George MacDonald is the type of writer that you can't predict. You never know where he is going to go next. This is the type of book I wish there were more of for my children to read. We got it at the library, but now we're going to buy it and we're giving it to other children as birthday gifts. Books that inspire and entertain at the same time are rare. People don't like his books because he calls a thing what it is and that hits too close to home.

MacDonald's Greatest!,

This review is from: The Lost Princess (Hardcover)
This book's message is the same message of 1 Samuel 16:7 that "man looks on the outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart". I read it in three days, because it's such an impossible put-down. The best thing is it's surprise ending. You can't go wrong with this book!

A beautiful edition, but...,

This was my introduction to this wonderful, psychologically penetrating story. It is beautifully illustrated (Maurice Sendak remarks on that in a blurb on the back), and there is great beauty in the prose, not to mention the wisdom and deep moral teaching. That said, any buyer should be alerted to the fact that this edition is far from the original. In fact, the "editor" has virtually re-written the story, modernizing it and cutting out much of MacDonald's verbacious descriptive prose (Thus, my "four" stars instead of five). I loved it--but am now reading the original (Available as the alternate title, The Wise Woman)...and must now say that if one has the time and patience, it is a shame to miss the "real" MacDonald. Keep this one for the pictures--but by all means get the original for a tasts of the true heart of this great Victorian writer.

I wish every adult and child would read this book.,

This is one of the most valuable books I've ever read myself and to the children within my sphere of influence. MacDonald, through this charming and deep story, enables the reader (at any age) to realize their own sin nature without ever identifying it as such. He helps us see our profound need for transformation and how that comes about through our surrender and obedient response to Truth. While written by a Christian and grounded in Christian theology (sin-love-redemption-transformation), all readers would benefit practically and be touched deeply by this story without necessarily knowing it is essentially the Good News of Christ.

George MacDonald is one of the most inspired authors I have ever read. His works are pictures of the soul painted with words a child can read and an adult can live by. The Lost Princess captures our story of the struggle between our Selves and our Best, and the battle with Illusion and selfishness we must fight to get there.
