Couldn't put it down., September 11, 2002
This review is from: Lost!: A Ranger's Journal of Search and Rescue (Paperback)
I bought this book at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park gift shop. I thought it would be a mediocre look into the search and rescue efforts at the park. But it turned out to be surprisingly well-done! The stories were extremely gripping--I read the book in one quick sitting. And I was disappointed when it was over. I only wish more stories had been included.
As the last event was dated 1989, I also wonder if techology (GIS, cell phones, etc.) has made park rescues any easier. It would have been nice to have had an afterword along those lines. But all in all this is a fantastic little book, a great unexpected find!

A must read for outdoor enthusiasts, May 4, 2006
This review is from: Lost!: A Ranger's Journal of Search and Rescue (Paperback)
The educational and sometimes down-right spooky tales of those gone missing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and its outlying boundaries are told by expert trackers, Dwight McCarter and Ron Schmidt.
This book is comprised of a few small stories providing lessons in how to survive true adversity and how to learn from the mistakes of those who died by making a few key bad decisions.
This book is an easy read for one sitting, but I prefered to read it one story at a time and then reflect upon the story and the lessons within.
Day hikers, backpackers, trackers, wilderness aficionados, and anyone who ever leaves the confines of home will benefit from this excellent read. Two thumbs up on this book worth keeping within your family library.
