If you enjoyed the first Lost music CD, you will love this one!

Giacchino somehow manages to mix a John Barry-esque classic feel with tribal rhythms and his own brand of frantic action.

What I constantly hear from people is "Should I buy it if I have the first?" For me, the answer was "Absolutely," but if you're wondering more specifically what themes are on here that the first was missing, here is a break down:

1. Main Title - Same as Always

2. Peace Through Superior Firepower - Desmond rushing to the ready upon hearing the explosion at the hatch. Action Track.

3. Final Countdown - The end of "Orientation," begins with Locke taking his 'leap of faith' with Helen (a subtle rendition of the classic Locke theme) and proceeds to Locke convincing Jack to press the button for the first time. Suspense Track.

4. World's Worst Landscaping - Hurley and his buddy messing with lawn gnomes from "Everybody Hates Hugo" - playful action reminiscent of the "Numbers" score not included on the S1 album. Playful Action Track.

5. Mess It All Up - Hurley's emotional climax in "Everybody Hates Hugo" where we see the reporters swarm his car in flashback. Emotion Track.

6. Hurley's Handouts - Food Distribution, a new S2 uplifting theme for Hurley. Emotion Track.

7. Just Another Day on the Beach - The crash as experienced by the Tallies at the start of "The Other 48 Days" - hints of the original Lost action theme and Lost aftermath theme. Action Track.

8. Ana Cries - Anna's moment with Eko. Lost aftermath theme. Emotion Track.

9. Tribes Merge - The conclusion of "The Other 48 Days" where the past and present meet. Heavy Tribal-style drums. Action Track.

10. Gathering - The Raft Launch theme from S1, but subtler, as Sun and Jin are reunited. Emotion Track.

11. Shannon's Funeral - Lost Aftermath theme. Emotion Track.

12. All's Forgiven...

I've been a big fan of Giacchino's music since his great scores for the "Medal of Honor" series. I am always impressed by his incomparable grasp of theme, his ingenuity in creating unique sounds, and his ability to combine the feel of classic - even nostalgic scoring - with contemporary and daring new ideas. And no one does action music like Giacchino. Too often, what passes for action music seems to be just a collection of dissonant sounds and crashes with no rhyme or reason. But Giacchino's heart - quickening action scoring never fails to have meaning and purpose; not to mention racing strings, blaring horns, and relentless percussion. I love it. I really do.

The score for Season 2 is much more varied than for Season 1, and a whole lot richer in sound, theme, texture, and action. There's a dark and more dangerous feel to it which perfectly fits the mood of the rising tension of the show. There's definitely more action, and there seem to be more themes represented on the album. Giacchino's themes are so full and unique, they seem like people with lives and personalities all their own. The "creepy theme" (Tracks 2 and 21), the "hatch theme" (3), "the Flight 815 theme" (7), the "Henry Gale theme" (24), and the "Others/ Betrayal theme" (23, 25), are all here and presented in great power. These are, of course, my own theme titles - I have no idea what the composer would call them.

And the more sentimental side of Lost shows up in the beautiful pieces, "Hurley's Handouts", "The Gathering", and "Rose and Bernard". "Rose and Bernard", in particular, is so good it reminds me of classic love themes from films like Superman and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The real stand out section of the album is the last six tracks.

....this is beautiful music. The first thing that I noticed when I first watched Lost was that the music, and the sound in general, is one of the key things that makes this show! I couldn't wait to buy the first CD, and now I am so glad I have the second one, too. This new one for season 2 is quite different from the Season 1 CD. The music is richer, more complex, and there is a greater range of styles and tempos. If you enjoyed the first Lost music CD, you will love this one!

Oh! What the eff happened to the incredible cue to Jack, Sayid and Sawyer swimming to Desomond's sailboat (Live Together, Die Alone)?! What happened to the incredible music behind Jack confronting Michael and convicing Hurley to maintain the ruse (Live Together, Die Alone)? These and a few other tracks were what I was most looking forward to from this season soundtrack, and I gotta tell you, I feel a little shortchanged. Why would Giacchino (or his producers) not put some of the most powerful cues from the entire season on the CD release? Yes, some cues are repeated in other cues or even other seasons, but they're usually variations of some sort (ex: Naomi Phone Home). Oh well. At least they were kind enough to give us The Tribes Merge, The Hunt, and The Gathering. Worth the buy but could have been immensely better.

I'm sure there are plethoras of theme variations in the LOST music vault... and it's a matter of opinion which tracks better represent the idea or feeling of a theme. I'm a big fan of the music in LOST, but for some reason, this soundtrack feels incomplete. There are either memorable themes missing, or weaker versions chosen instead of moments where they might have been stronger. For example, in representing "Fire + Water," why include track #13? Track 14 is ok, but still doesn't have much direction. The theme at the end of "Fire + Water" actually has the best version of Track 12-- which is from "The 23rd Psalm". But Track 12 is more upbeat and doesn't stand out as clear as its "F + W" variation. I suppose track selection is based on opinion, so I *can* understand why selecting a representative track could be especially hard. But who says only 1 track has to represent it? Why not add the stronger, purer variations in addition? The potential is there-- this could be a much more satisfying music compilation.
