5.0 out of 5 stars Finally!, May 12, 2009
This review is from: Lost: Season 4 (Original Television Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
I have been waiting for the release of this soundtrack since the beginning of Lost's fourth season last year. It was worth the wait! Giacchino is one of the finest composers on television. He masters both suspense and stirring emotion, capturing in sound everything that makes Lost such a great show. One of the things I love about the soundtracks are the recurring leitmotifs and themes, like the beautiful "Life and Death/Win One For The Reaper" theme that first appeared back in season 1. The track "Ji Yeon" combines that theme with "The Last To Know," another one of my favorite themes and "Locke of the Island" combines Locke's two themes with the Others theme, building on his growth over the seasons. But there are a lot of new themes on this album and it is worth purchasing the whole thing. If you only want a few songs, head over to Amazon's mp3 store and pick up some of the more powerful tracks to relive season 4. My favorites are "Of Mice and Ben" (Ben surrenders to Keamy at the end of the finale, part 1), "There's No Place Like Home" (the Oceanic 6 is reunited with their families off-Island), "The Constant" (who can forget Desmond's call to Penny from the freighter?), "Locke-ing Horns" (the survivors split into two factions and go their separate ways... Jack cries), "Lost Away - Or Is It?" (the best version of Sayid's theme so far) and "Hostile Negotiations" (the death of Alex--it's like a more concentrated version of Ben's sad piano theme in the third season track "Dharmacide"). I have a preference for the character and emotional themes, but I'm sure some people prefer the action ("Bobbing For Freighters" is a good one). I could keep going and list half the album-- it is just that good. Preview it for yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent Lost soundtrack, June 9, 2009

This review is from: Lost: Season 4 (Original Television Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
My expectations were high for this album, and I was not disappointed in the slightest. This is some of Michael Giacchino's best work. He's developed a very specific sound for Lost, yet within that sound are countless themes and motifs that he's constantly adapting and modifying and developing in fascinating ways. Granted, season 4 is probably the weakest thus far, musically speaking and otherwise. And yet this was still the one album I KNEW I'd be buying this year!

This soundtrack is similar in format to the first two - it's one disc with music from the whole season. Even though it doesn't have a separate disc with the complete soundtrack for the season finale (like season 3), you won't feel cheated when it comes to the finale: half of the disc is taken up by music from "There's No Place Like Home," starting with the track of the same name. This was a good decision - the last half of the disc really shines, with a lot of exciting action music and consistently excellent use of the various themes.

That's not to say the first half is bad, though. We're introduced to the new theme for the freighter in "Time and Time Again," Walt and Michael's theme FINALLY makes it onto CD in "Michael's Right to Remain Wrong," and "Ji Yeon" features a gorgeous but heartbreaking counterpoint between the theme for Sun and Jin and the life and death theme. But I always find myself eagerly anticipating "There's No Place Like Home," in which the Oceanic 6 theme is beautifully introduced, and after which the music sustains a very high level of awesomeness. Listen for outstanding variations of the traveling theme introduced in the season 1 soundtrack's "Hollywood and Vines," tense use of the freighter theme and main theme AND Sun and Jin's theme in "Bobbing for Freighters" (a favorite track of mine), and the most heroic statement of Ben's theme yet in "Locke of the Island," followed by a chilling stillness after the Island...well, you have to watch the show to find out what happens to the Island. =)

Anyway, this is a fantastic soundtrack, 100% worth the money. If you're new to the music of Lost, I do recommend buying the soundtracks in order...don't start with this one. But if you've got the first three and you haven't ordered this one, what are you waiting for?!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's finally here after a year long wait!, May 15, 2009
This review is from: Lost: Season 4 (Original Television Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
Best soundtrack of the whole series. This soundtrack is one I'm gonna listen to over and over again. It's captures the epicness, the action, emotion, suspense, and tragedy of the season. Certain tracks bring up old reactions to certain scenes from the 4th season like the music that played during the Penny and Desmond scenes in the Constant and in the finale, deaths of some of the characters, the smoke monster attacking the Mercenaries, Sayid and Nania, and the Oceanic Six as they leave the Island. It even has some of the old tracks but made better. This soundtrack is great. 5/5

I absolutely love the music from LOST. Michael Giacchino is a genius. However, I have to say that listening to it by itself is not the same as when I hear it on the show. With a few exceptions. Some of the softer tunes are soothing and beautiful to hear without the show such as "Landing Party" but the scary music isn't so much fun to listen to without watching the characters and the interesting situations that are occurring as the music is playing. I recommend just enjoying it from the show unless you find certain songs you like to hear in which case I would just download them instead of buying the whole cd.

I love this soundtrack. I have Season one and two and this by far is my favorite. I can watch the show now and listen to all of the character's themes. Great to relax to too, if you aren't afraid of a few smoke monsters. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Giacchino keeps creating magic, June 10, 2009
This review is from: Lost: Season 4 (Original Television Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
This review isn't as detailed as some of the others, but I will definitely add to their claims that Giacchino's efforts for this series continue to be stellar. Adding in a couple of new themes and giving some of the older ones new life is proof that this album will be a bit different than the others, but still follows the same orchestral feel. I certainly hope we, the consumers, get two more albums from this great series.

I have been waiting almost a year for this album. I do not know why the Season 4 Soundtrack has taken almost a year since the finale to be released, but it was worth the wait. Giacchino's themes are brilliant. Particularly outstanding are "The Constant" and "There's No Place Like Home." Along with Season 1's "Life and Death" and "Parting Words," these two tracks are Giacchino's best work.

I loved Lost. I miss it dreadfully. Then I learned there were soundtracks but could not get them in Australia so I bought them from Amazon. Wow. The music from Season 1, 2 and 3 is stunning. My favourites are: Life and Death, Tribes Merge, World's Worst Beach Party, Locked Out Again, Hurley's Handouts and many more.

I have yet to listen to seasons 4, 5 and 6 but I know I won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Michael Giacchino does another great season of LOST !!, June 29, 2009
This review is from: Lost: Season 4 (Original Television Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
Composer Michael Giacchino is well to becoming one of the great composers in the world. If he's not already there on most peoples lists. Another full 26 track season keeps fans of LOST and Giacchino himself in awe. The best part about it is that for most of the tracks it makes you remember what episode it was. That's what makes him a great composer!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Four down. Two more to go!, May 12, 2009

And so here we are at the fourth movement of Michael Giacchino's masterpiece of television music work. If John Williams scored a television show, I don't think he could have done better than what Mr. Giacchino has done with Lost.

Season 4 had some very noteworthy epic cues including "Lost Away - Or Is it?" that majestically played Sayid's motif as we saw the helicopter leaving the island to find the mysterious Freighter laying offshore. Then we have the Freighter theme itself, which could probably be classified as the signature theme for Season 4. "Time and Time Again" is the first time we hear the majestic Freighter theme and there is nice build up and explosion of its first statement that still gives me goosebumps to this day. It's one of those moments that sounds like your are watching a big budget motion picture.

Aside from the more grandiose cues, every Giacchino fan knows that he excels at the more subtle and emotional themes and there are plenty of them in this album. "The Constant" finally gives a worthy rendition of Desmond and Penny's theme that has sorely been missing since the Season 2 soundtrack. Season 4 also has quite possibly my favorite music ever written for the show in the Oceanic 6 theme as heard in "There's No Place Like Home". I had the honor of meeting Mr. Giacchino at the Varese Sarabande Anniversary CD signing event last year, and he gave me a heads up about this new theme, and it didn't disappoint. It captures perfectly the emotion of a moment fans of the show have been wanting to see since the first episode.

All in all, Giacchino does a wonderful job of blending the different motifs of all the various characters, events, and emotions he has created throughout the years. Season 4 was definitely his best work of the show since the groundbreaking first season. There are only two more chapters left in the Lost musical journey, and I dare say I might be looking forward to the new music more so than any other aspect of the show.
