"People must know themselves. Otherwise ethical problems will continue. Ethics should never be compartmentalized into personal and professional ethics. Ethics is ethics. Employers would be better served," said Jesep, "if they focused on individual employee development and not merely on thick policies and cookie-cutter ethics training. Employees need to have a sense of self."

Jesep further noted, "Wall Street's meltdown had less to do with regulations and far more to do with bankers and traders who lost personal perspective."

"What is greed?" Jesep asks. "It's a form of insecurity, an absence of perspective, and a failure to understand one's self and how professional behavior will impact family, friends, or people you may not even know. Ethical indiscretions are not victimless. This is why ethics, whether in MBA classes or drafting company policies, must always start with flesh and blood."

I am a student of ethics and in my role as a consultant to individuals and businesses alike, I see ethics as a crisis - a professional and personal crisis. In this book, Jesup makes it clear - ethics is doing right by people - and he provides the insight on how to plan policies and personal actions aligned to this belief. So many have missed this mark and see ethics as a legal or financial process - which it is in part - but it is how ethics affect people that is truly the issue. Jesup puts this complex and often misunderstood issue in plain English and in a manner that one can understand, learn from and most importantly - apply in all facets of their life. This should be required reading for any college student, those in or entering business and for the C suite level.
