Review

In this book, you find over 30 short accounts of people who have a rescued Boston Terrier. Some stories are fun and some serious. Several stories relate the awful thing about puppy mills and what happens to dogs there where they are used to breed purebred dogs and then they either die, or are abandoned or worse, once they are no longer of any use to the people who run these awful places. Many of the stories are heartwarming and funny. All in all, the stories give people the idea of how wonderful these little dogs are and how important it is that everyone remembers that there are so many dogs that need to be rescued and adopted.
One of the stories, Eyes Only For You, tells about how an owner connects with his rescue dog just from the friendly eyes he sees when he meets her. In a sad story with a happy ending Foster Failure tells of a dog that nobody wanted and was taken in at a foster puppy home only to find the foster parents fell in love with the dog and wound up adopting him. This family gave a home to the poor dog who had lived such an awful life in a puppy mill. A few pages such as A Snort Break give a few sentences telling happy tails or funny moments about different Terriers.
I believe that a book like this would open any one's eyes to the importance of choosing a rescue dog when the opportunity arises. As different books on different breeds are written and read, I imagine even more breeds of dogs will be better off and more dogs adopted. Perhaps you might have a rescue dog story of your own or may want to adopt a rescue dog after reading about these great animals and all they go through. --Karen Haney, Bookin With Bingo

MidAmerica Boston Terrier Rescue was excited for the opportunity to partner with Happy Tails Books for their Boston Terrier book. About the Author

Kyla Duffy and Lowrey Mumford are dog lovers who wish to use the Lost Souls: FOUND! series of books to raise awareness about dog adoption and generate funds for rescue groups through the donation of a portion of each sale. Lowrey knows journalism, and Kyla has experience in entrepreneurship; this has created the perfect synergy to launch the Happy Tails Books project. Lowrey has two adopted dogs of her own. Kyla has two adopted dogs and continues to foster dogs for a dog rescue organization.

More About the Author

Kyla Duffy likes to make life difficult. For example, when she decided to adopt a Boston terrier in 2006, she took in Bill, a practically non-responsive two-year-old with a traumatic past, who turned out to be as strange and as stubborn as a Stonehenge. Though dogs are usually the ones blamed for begging, Bill taught Kyla to be an expert in the field:

"Bill, would you please get out of bed?"

"Bill, can I please take you hiking?"

"Bill, please eat that delicious chicken I just cooked for you. Do you want me to wrap it in cheese, baby?"

Kyla thought that Bill's life needed a little difficulty, too, so she gave him foster "playmates"--49 of them, to be exact. And then she gave him Hillary, a splash Boston terrier parvo survivor who annoyed him right out of bed and into the awaiting paws of any other dog who would have him.

Long before dog drama took center stage in her life, Kyla's studies kept her entertained. Her dream was to teach at the University of Colorado, and the only way to do that was to obtain a master's degree, at the bare minimum. After seven years of intensive study, she was ready, and she was hired! But just then, the winds of change gusted, drawing her focus up into the air, and she decided to pursue flying trapeze instead.

There were plenty of opportunities for flying trapeze work in The States, but where was the adventure in that? Kyla took a job as far away as possible, in a country where she couldn't read the language, speak the tongue, or easily bring her dogs: Japan. Learning any language is a never-ending process, but who would have thought that preparing dogs for immigration would take nearly that same amount of time? For Kyla, it was just what she needed--complications are the spice of life!

Bill and Hillary stayed with Kyla's parents while she flew over the Pacific to, um, fly on the other side of the Pacific. Then, when the long home-quarantine period ended, Kyla hopped a plane home to pick up her dogs. During her brief stay in America, she received news that should not have been even remotely shocking: the dogs had sunk their claws into her parents' hearts, and they were "invited" to remain at their vacation home for the duration. In the end, Kyla was able to negotiate the release of Bill from her parental pup-nappers, but she could only obtain visitation rights for Hillary.

Now, Hillary lives with Kyla's parents in a three-story home on the corner of a beautiful park in Boulder, Colorado, and Kyla and Bill share a third of a rusted, old shipping container at POP Circus in Japan. Bill spends most of his time sleeping and eating the leftover curry off the neighbor's dishes. As for Kyla, when she is not princessing around in a tiara or taking long walks on the beach (with Bill, of course), she is writing about their adventures. From "B" to "T" ("Bill" to "Typhoons"), circus life with a dog in a foreign country riddled with natural disasters supplies Kyla with almost all the challenge she needs, but the wind's always a-blowin'...

Stay tuned to see what adventures await!

---
Though a Jersey girl for life, Kyla considers Boulder, Colorado, her American hometown. She holds a BS in Marketing, a BA in Spanish Translation, and an MPS in Organizational Leadership. In addition to performing flying trapeze, Kyla owns http://happytailsbooks.com and runs http://upforpups.org, two organizations dedicated to making life better for dogs in need and supporting the efforts of their rescuers.

I agree, this book has touched my heart and my soul. I was so anxious to get my copy of this book. When I did, I sat down, began reading the many heart warming stories of these rescued Boston Terriers, including the story of Cricket, our Boston Terrier who we rescued from NEBTr. Before I knew it I was at the last page wanting to read more stories of such wonderful adoptions. Many of the stories although sad all had a happy ending. I highly suggest purchasing this book! Not only will the purchase go towards a contribution in helping Boston Terrier rescue groups all over, it will help you come to realize that adopting a rescued 'innocent' will make a world of difference in your life as well. Pick-up a copy, sit down, read and enjoy!

The stories of the Boston Terriers in this book are really heartwarming. It is wonderful to read about the Boston's lives who were saved by kindhearted, patient, loving people. The antics of the Boston's had me laughing out loud. Anyone who loves dogs will appreciate this book. This book is a real tribute to dogs everwhere. There are so many Bostons in the stories who were really misused, and yet they forgave humans and learned to love their people in spite of all the bad things that had happened to them. These stories are bound to help people to understand that a resuce dog is a great option and that they should take a chance on adopting one. Boston Terriers are certianly a loving breed, and this book helps that shine through.

I could not wait to get my book and when I did I read it immediately. I could not put it down. I can't remember when I read a book as wonderful as this. Thank you so much for putting it together. I laughed and cried. It makes me understand my Boston a lot better. She is my life. Although I did not get her from a Rescue group, I do donate and follow my local group. I received Fancy Pants from a breeder. After reading Lost Souls I now know it must have been a puppy mill. The book has explained a lot of Fancy's actions which are similar to a lot of puppy mill dogs. I wish I could adopt them all and show them all the love they deserve.

Boston Terriers are one of the three dog breeds that I love most so I was really looking forward to reading about this breed.

The stories in Lost Souls: Found! Inspirational Stories of Adopted Boston Terriers have not only opened my eyes to the characteristics of these dogs (both good and bad) but also gave a better understanding to the behind-the-scenes of all those doggie-in-the-window stores and how, rather than buying a puppy there and feeding those horrible people's pockets, giving one of their `thrown-away' dogs a second chance is such a wonderful thing to do! Most importantly though, this book has been a real eye-opener to the fulfillment and change adopting a Boston, or any other mistreated dog, can bring to one's life.

I always hated puppy mills and dog shops with a dozen different breeds available because of the import, the sickness of a lot of these puppies and the poor conditions the breeder dogs had to live in. Only now I know just how terrible life is for these dogs and how cruel the owners are. They really couldn't care less about their dog once they're not good enough anymore for breeding. It's so sad to read about the malformed feet because of the wire cage, the fear of stairs, cars, people, a fear of just about everything. Poor little things. Who wouldn't want to show them just how beautiful life can be?

All the stories are quick-reads and before you know it you've finished the book but are craving for more happy endings. I am glad that it's a compilation rather than one dog's story just so you can get a lot of possible situations of adoption. Although terrible stories in the beginning it's a joy to read about the love that filled these dogs' lives after they've been adopted.

A wonderful emotional roller-coaster of tears and laughs! Immediately engaging and uplifting as you learn more about the devastating effects of "millers", the problem of abandonment, and the everyday heros of rescue and their nationwide comraderie that mend the broken psyches of these dogs who then go on to love and inspire their new families.

I've read the the Boston Terrier, Dachshund and Labrador Retriever books and recommend them all - could hardly put them down. Sometimes I laughed so loud, my own BT's and Doxie turned around to look at me!
