I really like this album, I really want everyone to buy it, but I'll be objective in my review and have to put in a few downers.

Doves are the epitomy, maybe even pinacle of a long line of positive English musical influences. I will hazard a guess that they were heavily influenced by early Stone Roses, Primal Scream, Radiohead and maybe even early Oasis (not their current dross) which is why I like this album so much. However, I personally feel that poor production robbed this album of classic status. Sometimes albums (Stone Roses) can carry this with grace but I feel that Doves could have done with being tightened up a bit, perhaps a track or two shorter and moved away from that sort of almost 8-track sound quality (try listening to this through ear-phones, the volume ebbs & flows rather annoyingly). Whilst Coldplay are a currently chart-topping, Doves are playing second fiddle with an album that is for me, far superior.

Rant Over! This is a musical treat - from power pop (a bit reminiscent or Ultra Vivid Scene)of Here it Comes & Catch the Sun to the more slower and more gratifying Sea Song and A House.

Enjoy this album and hopefully I will be adding an extra star for their second if their production improves

'Lost Souls' is a very promising debut album that has a very intense emotional feel to it. The obvious stand-out tracks are the 2 singles 'The Cedar Room' and 'Here It Comes'. Doves are very similar to Shack in that they write melodic, accoustic, pop. If you are looking for the most promising debut album of 2000, you've found it.

Just got the debut C.D. from British group,Doves.The C.D. has 12 tracks which show that the group have plenty of promise,but they haven't quite made a masterpiece just yet.Many of the songs have very long instrumental intros,which sort of reminded me of the Mogwai C.D.-'Come on die young'.The album is quite atmostpheric in a dark late night kind of way.Song 4-'Sea Song' comes as a surprise as it's quite a jaunty sing-a-long tune.Another very catchy song is the aptly titled 'Melody Calls'.The group thank artists as diverse as Scott Walker,Joy Division,Velvet Underground and for the more upbeat songs The Clash.So from this list of artists you can clearly tell where they are coming from.Having said that I feel they seem to have held something back on this C.D.No tune comes out and really grabs you enough to make it a truly memorable C.D.,but they do show enough potential here to make you think that they may make an excellent C.D. in the near future.A promising debut and a group to watch out for.
