4.0 out of 5 stars This Space Odyssey even has a Cyclops!, January 15, 1999
This review is from: Lost in Space Gift Pack (vol. 4-6) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This set contains the final two episodes in the five introductory linked stories, "There Were Giants In The Earth" and "The Hungry Sea" as well as "Welcome Stranger."

"There Were Giants In the Earth" is best remembered for the Cyclops giant that attacks Professor Robinson and Major West while visiting their weather station. A fine episode that not only tells a good story but manages to nicely weave the priviously filmed unaired (at the time) pilot segments from "No Place To Hide" and new footage that added Dr. Smith and the Robot characters.

"The Hungry Sea" comprises some great special effects footage taken from the unaired pilot as well as inserted scenes between Smith and the Robot. The good doctor and his "animated weather station" are holed up in the Jupiter 2 while the rest of the family heads South in an attempt to avoid oncoming alien Winter. It is also here we see Smith's change of heart as he realizes that without human companionship he'd go completely mad. Tense drama and action packed.

"Welcome Stranger," concerns the arrival of Texas space traveller Jimmy Hapgood, played nicely by character actor Warren Oates. This episode is filled with action, adventure and humor that never becomes camp or unbelievable as later episodes would. Highlights include Jimmy and Don in a fist fight, an "operation" on the Robinson Robot, and Smith trying to sweet talk his way onto Hapgood's ship Travelling Man. Total entertainment! Keep your frying pan ready! (CLANG!)
