Avantasia - a pleasant surprise!,
By CraftyReader (Maryland, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lost In Space EP (Chapter 1) (MP3 Download)
I understand that Avantasia is Sammet's side-project from Edguy, and Lost In Space 1 & 2 are some of the songs that didn't make it onto the upcoming Scarecrow CD. I'm prefacing this review to say I enjoyed the Metal Opera (1 & 2) a lot, and Lost In Space didn't leave me disappointed either.
Please note that if you do NOT enjoy progressive power metal, symphonic metal, or similar genres, this may not be a musical journey you wish to take. There's no growling, no inaudible lyrics as might be found in other metal genres. For folks like me who appreciate groups like Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Within Temptation, and Kamelot, Avantasia is definitely a group to be reckoned with. And ladies, Sammet isn't too bad on the eyes either. <laugh> I agree with previous comments about the 80's metal vibe to Lost In Space - and to me, that's not necessarily a bad thing. You will find that same influence in many of the recent metal imports from Scandinavia, Europe and even from Spain! Sammet has worked, and continues to work, with some of the most respected names in metal/rock, and I think his work shows that input. The tracks on this CD are solid, they're well mastered and produced albeit a bit disjointed as a workable whole (perhaps I'm spoiled by Avantasia's previous concept work). For those of us who weathered European pop music in the 80's, Avantasia's covers of "Lay all Your Love On Me" (by ABBA) and "Dancing with Tears in My Eyes" (by Ultravox) will recognize them immediately. Sammet did both tunes justice by hardening them up significantly, yet remaining true to the originals. What was once disco & synthopop is now something I wouldn't mind blaring out of my car window on a summer day. I am so glad I added these CD's to my collection. I am eagerly awaiting Scarecrow, and hope it pleases me as much as Lost in Space has. Thanks for reading & considering this review.

A Warm Up For "The Scarecrow",
By Joe H. (New England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lost In Space EP (Chapter 1) (MP3 Download)
Avantasia Part One and Two from Tobias Sammet, frontman for the German power metal band Edguy, could best be described as two very nice surprises. I wasn't sure what to make of the first one when first catching word of it. It was billed as being an all-star cast of metal vocalists performing what could best be described as a metal opera. While I would argue the cast was far from all-star standards, the music ended up being all-star quality rivaling some of the work put out by Mr. Sammet's "real" band Edguy. With that said, it's no surprise a third album would be produced.
"Lost in Space" is an EP that serves as a bit of a warm-up for the third album titled "The Scarecrow" due out in late January. The title track and the third track "Another Angel Down" are the only tracks that will be featured on that album. The title track is a pretty melancholy song that keeps it simple. I wasn't too enamored with it upon first hearing it but it has grown on me more as I hear it. The song is too short to become repetative, so the simplicity of it is not so much a weakness of the song but a conscious decision on the part of Sammett. After the first verse it is easy to see where the song is heading and how it will conclude. Included on the disc is the video for it which I suppose is worth a single viewing, but isn't something that will bring you back. The second track "Lay All Your Love on Me" is quirky at best. The tempo is odd and the vocals are somewhat loud in the mix. It is a track that takes getting used to but even after a few listens it will likely just remain filler. "Another Angel Down" is perhaps the strongest track on the album, which certainly bodes well for the eventual album. It is a pretty typical Avantasia song and one that wouldn't sound out of place on one of the first two records (unlike Lost in Space). The track that follows it would be the other standout track, "The Story Ain't Over" which sounds like a mix between an Edguy ballad and an Avantasia one. It's a blend that works and if you like the ballads put out by both outfits you'll probably like this one. "Return to Avantasia" is just a filler instrumental piece and not worth downloading if you're purchasing this song in mp3 format. "Ride the Sky" is a pretty straight-forward rocker that is also quite brief. If you're downloading the album my advice would simply be if the preview doesn't do anything for you then stay away since it clocks in at a whopping 2 minutes and fifty-four seconds. If you buy the CD version you'll get some bonus stuff, such as the previously mentioned video clip. There's also a behind the scenes of the video shoot clip that is basically just the music video with a blue screen - not very interesting. There's some pics and wallpapers that will only please those who have a crush on Tobi. All in all, for an EP this provides some good value which is a standard for Edguy EP's. For that reason alone I would recommend it to fans of Avantasia but not necessarily power metal fans. If you only dig the speed stuff from the Avantasia albums then this probably isn't for you as the album is mostly mellow. And if you're on a budget and can only afford one of the Lost in Space EP's I would suggest Part 2 over this one.

Good group of songs..,
This review is from: Lost In Space EP (Chapter 1) (MP3 Download)
But not what I expected...The last 2 were very epic fantasy power metal...This is like the same direction as newer edguy...Some songs sound like 80s rock and others do have that Epic PM sound...It's very Diff. Not a bad thing though.
