5.0 out of 5 stars Lisa Does it Again-an absolutely Breathtaking Recording, December 13, 2002
This review is from: Lost in a Summer Night (Audio CD)
I've been a fan of Lisa's since the very first time I heard her sing. The woman has a gift for lyrics like few singers I have EVER heard, and I've listened to a lot of singers over the years. Her first recording showed so much promise, and on "Lost in a Summer Night", she delivers the goods in spades!

It's hard to know which tracks to recommend the most because there is not a single weak moment on the entire disc. Lisa possesses impeccable taste in songs, and each one is lovely and special in its own way. I guess for me the standouts here are two I'd never heard before, the title track (unbelievable that so few singers have recorded it!) and the sweet "We're the Couple in the Castle", along with perennial favorite "Skylark" (Lisa's version stands up to ANY you have ever heard, I promise), the sad and lovely "Isn't it a Pity?", and the simple and poignant "I Never Went Away." She also shows a real talent for gospel on the "Come Sunday/Sermonette" medley (which really swings!)

Lisa has it all - her high level of musicianship is obvious (and rare among singers!), but it's never just "technical". She combines her musicianship with gorgeous tone and some of the best phrasing in the business (again, that gift for lyrics). This woman is going to go places, mark my words. She continues to grow and mature, and really begins to come into her own on this disc. I'd give it ten stars if I could. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Subtle, Elegant Perfection, January 22, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Lost in a Summer Night (Audio CD)
Lisa's first recording revealed one of the most natural, warm singers I've heard in a very long time, as well as a big gift for song lyrics. Here, she is in full elegant flower, delivering an impeccable, polished set and showing tremendous artistic growth in the process. There is not one bad second on this record, but my favorites are the title track (Lisa calls it "breathtaking" in her liner notes, and she is right - I can't stop playing it), the very swinging "Almost Like Being in Love", "Isn't it a Pity?" (a revelation here, because many singers just deliver the lyrics, but Lisa sings it full of regret and sadness, along with a surprising and pitch-perfect a cappella verse), and "Robert Frost", which I didn't know before but is really funny. If Lisa has one weakness, it would be that her scatting is not especially inventive, BUT it swings great and every note is right on the money. As she continues to grow and develop, this will probably mature as well. This girl is a marvel of fine jazz singing, completely honest and natural, and her instrumental backup on this disc is stellar. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT A TALENT!!!!, May 7, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Lost in a Summer Night (Audio CD)
Lisa Hindmarsh has a voice like honey and caramel, and an uncommon gift for phrasing and lyrics. Here she takes standards and unknown gems and makes them all her very own. The only mystery to me is why am I not hearing her everywhere?????
