Classic Ambient!,
By The Mountaineer (W. Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lost Terrain (Audio CD)
When I first started listening to ambient music Jeff Greinke's Lost Terrain and the dark-ambient CD Casket-Dark Frequencies became my favorite artists.Jeff Greinke's Lost Terrain is a mystical journey for your mind and ears. Not doubt synthesizers and samplers are heavily used on this CD but it has a very deep and dream-like sound to it,lots of evolving and echoing soundscapes.I will say that there is one dark-ambient track on Lost Terrain called 'The Moor' which is a must listen, very cinematic:)

Greinke IS the Weather Man,

This was my second Greinke album, the first beingthe brooding masterpiece that is Changing Skies (1990), which is still my favorite. As the Amazon review says, the fan of Eno (i.e. On Land) will have lots to enjoy on this album. This music is stark and chilly, though not 'bleak or depressing'; rather, it is delivered with a sense of wonder and awe for nature. It is such a nice piece of contemplative/meditative work that over the years I've found that I like to work to this kind of music as well as relax. Jeff Greinke is a class act and in a class all by himself. One could draw analogies to Eno of course, but when the ear truly pays attention, that comparison seems the more flimsy. Greinke hears with his ears and composes with his own voice. He is every bit the Master as Eno when it comes to theses type of atmospherics, and any 'fan' of ambient, electronic, innovative music must sample, if not own, a good smattering of Greinke's work. I first heard him in the late 80's and I'm still moved by his work to this day.

So much of the ambient music available is really sappy and dull. At first, I was ready to lump this recording in with the slush pile, but closer listening revealed some interesting things going on behind the synth washes. Greinke is a musician with original - if somewhat unobtrusive - ideas. It now comes off my shelf several times a year. It's no "Blessing of Tears," but it's got some backbone and brains behind it.
