Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2AOlivia would do just about anything to rid herself of her wobbly front tooth. She tries biting into hard foods, coloring her tooth black, and covering it with black licorice in order to join the snooty Lost Tooth Club. She is excluded because she hasn't lost a tooth yet and thus doesn't qualify for the pudding parties or the camaraderie of the clubhouse next door. Johnson's pastels are appealing and humorous (Olivia's black-and-white dog is always by her side) and will undoubtedly appeal to recent or wanna-be baby-tooth losers. However, one has to wonder if Johnson might be sending the wrong message to kids by promoting exclusionary clubs. Patience is obviously not Olivia's long suit and her literal stumble into maturity only facilitates a weird, lucky, temporarily happy ending.AJohn Sigwald, Unger Memorial Library, Plainview, TX

From Kirkus Reviews

A book with an expected endinga tooth falls outthat unintentionally reaffirms the value of pure conformity. Olivia repeatedly claims to have lost a tooth to gain entrance to the exclusive Lost Tooth Club all her friends have been allowed to join. Efforts to dupe the members include blackening her loose tooth with a marker, covering it with black licorice and trying to pass off a white pebble as a missing tooth, all in the name of belonging. The insistent club members, bordering on mean-spirited, catch her; when Olivia stumbles over her tooth after declaring that she is going to start a ``loose tooth'' club, the tooth flies out and she is welcomed into the clubhouse. The first tooth incident is funny, but the humor wears thin. Still, Johnson excels at animal expressions, as in her boisterous dream sequence depicting a gap-toothed menagerie, presided over by a moon with a missing tooth; Olivia's flyaway red hair forms a centerpiece to most of the soft-toned pastel compositions. 5.0 out of 5 stars A lighthearted and engaging tale of a basic rite of passage., September 30, 1998

This review is from: The Lost Tooth Club (Hardcover)
All the children of tooth-losing age that I have met recently (and there have been many) have appreciated this warmly illustrated book. They invariably come forward with stories of their own tooth loss, and identify readily with the characters in the book. Definitely a "must" for families with children of tooth-losing age!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Lost Tooth Club, May 12, 2010
This review is from: The Lost Tooth Club (Paperback)
I teach 3rd - 5th grade and some of my students reviewed the book The Lost Tooth Club. This is what they thought.

When I was a little girl I lost my tooth. Have you ever lost a tooth before? Guess what? I read this book called The Lost Tooth Club by Arden Johnson. This book is about a girl who wants to lose her tooth. She wiggles it every day to be in a tooth club. She wants to be with her friends. You should get this book for your kids because your kids might have lost their tooth.

~ Janada

The book The Lost Tooth Club by Arden Johnson is not very original. This book is not interesting. The girl said she wants to be in the Lost Tooth Club more than anything. Who wants to be in a club more than anything? I didn't like when she lied two times that her tooth came out. The illustrations are not that good either. It was not nice when other children laughed at her when she lied to them. That's why you shouldn't read this book.

~ Ashley

Did you ever want to be in a club? How about a lost tooth club? I read The Lost Tooth Club by Arden Johnson. Olivia wanted to go in the lost tooth club but there is a problem, she didn't lose any teeth. The book is funny like the page ... There is only one problem. The book didn't tell why the tooth fell out. This book has humor, embarrassing stuff, and happiness. This book is good for your children. Trust me, you'll like it!

~ Pedro

I was very impressed with this story. I was taken back to myown childhood after reading it. I liked the many ways Olivia tried tohide her front tooth when trying to join the club. I thought the story was very funny and cute. I think it is a good example for children that all things happen in due time. I would recommend it for any family library.
