This review is from: Lost Treasure Ships of the Northern Seas: A Guide and Gazetteer to 2000 Years of Shipwreck (Hardcover)
Research is the key to uncovering the details of any ship lost - whether recently or in the distant past. Naturally, the more years which have passed since the wrecking, the more searching there is to be done. Research itself is so complex, I don't think any person could claim to know of every single avenue which might have been consulted. Mr Pickford's research is as good as it gets. This author first came to prominence with his excellent "Atlas of Shipwreck & Treasure" and "Lost Treasure Ships of the Twentieth Century." Now we have a book which is described as a "Guide and Gazetteer to 2,000 years of Shipwreck." It is exactly that. Strictly confined to the North Sea and Baltic, Mr Pickford provides the reader with 15 individual stories of great shipwrecks which include the Lutine - probably the most famous of them all, if only because of her bell. Even a quick glance through the book will reveal the high degree of detail. Mostly illustrated in B&W, there are photographs and other illustrations - both ancient and modern, which all combine in excellent fashion to provide the most complete and competent work. With Mr Pickford's penchant for producing books about treasure ships and with this title being confined to a very specific geographical area, it all rather suggests we might be treated to similar works on other areas of the world in the near future. I do hope so. NM |
