Twelve-year-old Jane Reid is marooned in a small port-town in Northern Ireland while her parents vacation across the sea in Scotland. Her hosts are kind, but she's bored to distraction because she has nothing to read. Then books start appearing mysteriously in her little attic room.

With a good characters, a nicely detailed setting, and a touch of the supernatural, this very touching story kept my children rapt. I think it's the besk of the books that Martin Waddell published as 'Catherine Sefton'. Very good for reading ages nine and up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick, but memorable, read, May 28, 2003

I had this book as a girl and remembered the gist of it without remembering the title. I used Booksleuth to post a description and someone solved it for me. After I ordered the book from Amazon, I read it quickly, but enjoyed it a lot - as much as I had when I was young. Very nice story, and very little 'dating' of the time period.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read for bookloving girls., August 26, 2010
This review is from: Lost Treasures: In a Blue Velvet Dress - Book #8 (Paperback)
I found this yesterday at our local library and read it due to the back cover blurb. It is an interesting story of an Irish girl sent to visit her aunt and uncle in a small seaside town while her parents visit Scotland. A real lover of books and reading, she packs a lot of books but takes the wrong suitcase and can't find a single book, bookstore or library in the whole town! Her relatives have a telephone book, but it doesn't keep her interest. She can't imagine how she will survive until her parents return without something to read except the Radio Digest. A book appears on her bedside table when she wakes in the night, she reads it and goes back to sleep only to find the book gone in the morning. The next night, a different book, always old books.
Members of the large Smollet family provide daytime entertainment and eventually friendship. The mystery of the appearing/disappearing books deepens as she meets various town characters (her Uncle Albert being one of the funniest of them all). Strongly recommended.
