Book Description

The landscape of Scotland is littered with lost communities, most emptied during the Highland Clearances. But there is one abandoned village that dates from much later – the mid-1970s. It is called Pollphail and it is a legacy of the early optimism of the North Sea oil boom. Mired in financial scandal and branded an expensive while elephant, it is an uncomfortable reminder of the cost of failure.
Located on the southern tip of the Cowal peninsula, Pollphail was built to house an army of migrant workers. But it was never occupied and for over 35 years this company town has lain empty. The reason is close at hand; less than half a mile away, at Portavadie, oil platforms were to have been constructed in a huge manmade lagoon. But a sudden sea change left the venture high and dry.
Illustrated with colour and black and white photographs, maps and plans, this book charts the fascinating history of Pollphail from its construction through to the present day.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story May 19, 2012

This is about the "Lost Village of Pollphail" a Scottish village created for the oil boom that never got a chance. The book is 466 locations, but part of that is to talk about the author's other stories. The Pollhail part is only 428 locations long. The story is interesting, and what happened to the village, the sales and resales. I can see why some people would be pretty ticked at the UK government for this pig in a poke that the public got sold.

While it was interesting, I'm glad I got it for free. I'm hard pressed to pay $2.99 for something so short, when so much value is out there for free.

Clearly, the sort of thing everyone has to judge for themselves.
