Book Description

5 and upK and up
A beautiful springtime fantasy from the creators of the best-selling Stranger in the Woods. This New York Times bestseller is a quiet story about trust and patience. Nature lovers of all ages will appreciate the amazing photography and gentle words which weave a tale about a young fawn waiting for her mother's return. From a red-winged blackbird to a hissing goose, woodland creatures keep watch over a young fawn they believe is lost in the woods. But the book also delivers a message: most fawns found alone in the woods are not lost or abandoned. In fact, newborn fawns spend their first weeks without mom because her scent will attract predators to her young.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3–The forest is abuzz over a newborn fawn. Various creatures have spotted him and all are worried that he might be lost. Despite his assurance that he's just waiting for his mother, the animals chime in with comments and offers of help. She returns, time passes, and the fawn grows stronger. He sees other young animals maturing, and at the end of the story, he is big enough to go exploring with his mother. The slight, meandering plot serves mainly as a vehicle to introduce photos of the forest animals. The images are clear and detailed, and will be sure to draw admiration–especially the adorable close-up of the fawn that even shows his eyelashes. The photo of a tree frog camouflaged against the bark of a tree is another standout. At the end, readers are asked to find specific animals that appear in the pictures. This is not a good choice for a group read-aloud, because the visual details require a close look, but it would be nice for sharing one-on-one.–Arwen Marshall, Minneapolis Public Library

Review

Praise for Lost in the Woods: "The astonishingly beautiful photographs blend with a story that carries us on an elegant journey through a corner of the tapestry of nature." - Robert Bateman, artist and naturalist. "[E]ndearing and lends itself to reading aloud - but it is the book's breathtaking photography that will cast a spell, not just on children but wildlife aficionados of any age." - Publishers Weekly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good story, good pictures, something extra = recommended, October 17, 2004
This review is from: Lost In The Woods: A Photographic Fantasy (Hardcover)
Why would a small fawn be alone in the woods? Is he lost? Where is his mother? A short children's story, Lost in the Woods combines nice, detailed photography with a story line that points out one of the reasons why a fawn might be alone in the woods. With a frog, chipmunk, goose, squirrel, meadowlark, and other animals the fawn learns about them while waiting for his mother to return. With a handful of hidden animals to look for in the text it is also a fun challenge to find them all. Lost in the Woods is highly recommended for young children.

A semi-finalists in the 2005 Independent Publisher Book Awards!

A newborn fawn lies by itself in the forest. Is it lost? Where is its mother? As the other woodland creatures ponder this mystery, they offer the newcomer many suggestions. But the fawn rejects them all, insisting that its mother will return. Things are not always what they seem, the tale tells us. Mother deer leave their newborns for days at a time to protect their young. Children are introduced to concepts such as camouflage, not to mention a broad range of young animals, from goslings to a hilarious young raccoon. Close-up photography of each animal is superb, and shots of the fawn make you want to reach out and touch its shining coat. The husband and wife team who created this book have been photographing wildlife together for years, and wanted to help others appreciate outdoor wonders. How fortunate for all readers who discover this remarkable offering!

The writing in this book is much stronger and more vivid than the writing in Stranger in the Woods. Stranger in the Woods gave me the feeling that the photos could stand on their own at least as well as they could with the text. Lost in the Woods, however, has a definite storyline to help the images along. I don't appreciate the fairly meaningless repetition of sounds (like "chickadee-dee-dee") any more than I did in the first book, but it doesn't stick out as badly here. I felt a little thrown when I got to a point in the storyline that seemed to be the climax/ending and found that the book didn't end there, but the story is good overall. The photos are charming, and the back of the book features a selection of critter pictures to go back and find within the larger photos. There's a lot to look at here.
