Book Description

August 18, 2003
From the creator of Astro Boy and Metropolis, comes Lost World, the first of Osamu Tezuka's cycle of original science-fiction graphic novels-including Metropolis and Future World-published in the late 1940s and early 1950s. When a rogue planet approaches Earth, a team of scientists voyage to the world and discover a land out of the ancient past-a planet populated by dinosaurs! But a group of crooks has stowed away aboard the spacecraft, and the scientists must fight for their survival against both crooks and hungry monsters! A dazzling work of imagination-and guest-starring some friends you may recognize from Astro Boy - Lost World is timeless graphic fiction from one of the medium's true masters, available for the first time in an English-language edition.

More About the Author

Osamu Tezuka (1928-89) is the godfather of Japanese manga comics. He originally intended to become a doctor and earned his degree before turning to what was then a medium for children. His many early masterpieces include the series known in the U.S. as Astro Boy. With his sweeping vision, deftly interwined plots, feel for the workings of power, and indefatigable commitment to human dignity, Tezuka elevated manga to an art form. The later Tezuka, who authored Buddha, often had in mind the mature readership that manga gained in the sixties and that had only grown ever since. The Kurosawa of Japanese pop culture, Osamu Tezuka is a twentieth century classic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a Bad First Book, November 12, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lost World Volume 1 (v. 1) (Paperback)
This book was my least favorite of the sci-fi trilogy (Lost World, Metropolis, Next World).

The art was done in zincography by two different engravers, so half way through the look changes. It is in the same style as early Merry Melodies, Betty Boop, and Popeye cartoons, but it was done in that era so it makes sense. The art is also not quite as tight or interesting as Tezuka's later works.

The story was entertaining. Another planet comes as close as it will to the Earth and certain people on Earth want to get to the planet to obtain energy chrystals. During the journey we see space ships and dinosaurs. The story drags with no real twists or discoveries.

The characters are the same as in other Tezuka novels, but not as developed as they later become.

Overall it was fine to read, but not nearly as well done as Metropolis, Next World, or Astro Boy. If you really love Tezuka's work and you want to read it all, then pick this up. If you're not a big fan of his work, I doubt you'll like this book.
