Book Description

March 1, 1998
Long before Michael Crichton's high-tech dinosaurs roamed the bestseller lists, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle envisioned an isolated land of prehistoric life that exists in the 20th century. In Conan Doyle's Lost World (1912) young newspaper journalist Edward Malone is in search of an assignment involving "adventure and danger," since his beloved Gladys has refused his marriage proposal on the grounds that he's not "a man of great deeds and strange experiences." Enter Professor Challenger, an impetuous man who claims to have spotted a pterodactyl deep in the Amazon jungle. When the professor offers to lead skeptics on an expedition to this "lost world," Malone signs up for the trip of a lifetime. Infused with the same masterful dialogue, suspense, and characterizations as Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes tales, The Lost World is a spirited science fiction novel filled with dinosaurs and ape-men, and a story that's obviously still firing imaginations today.

About the Author

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland; he received a bachelor of medicine degree in 1881 from the University of Edinburgh and was awarded his medical degree in 1885. He began writing in 1879 to help pay for his education. After setting up his medical practice Conan Doyle couldn't attract many patients and continued to write to keep himself busy. He wrote the first Sherlock Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet, in 1886, and published it the following year. It was the Holmes short stories published in The Strand Magazine beginning in 1891 that became wildly popular and made Conan Doyle famous. He also wrote historical and science fiction novels like Micah Clarke (1889), The White Company (1891), and The Lost World (1912), and thought these books more important than his Sherlock Holmes tales.

The moonlight shone upon his huge projecting eyes, the row of enormous teeth in his open mouth, and the gleaming fringe of claws upon his short, powerful forearms. With a scream of terror I turned and rushed wildly down the path. Behind me the thick, gasping breathing of the creature sounded louder and louder . . .

I'm not sure why it surprised me that this book was good, but I was really amazed. I like the Sherlock Holmes mysteries as well, but felt Doyle did something very different here and it was refreshingly interesting to read. I realize there have been many modern day copycat type stories, with Jurassic Park being one of these, but I felt Doyle's version just had something extra. I guess we all dream of the day when someone finds a "Lost World" where prehistoric animals still reign, despite the fact that we know it is impossible. As I read it, I tried to put myself back in time and think as his original audience must have thought. At that time, with the lack of technology, they could certainly have imagined a place out there, yet to be discovered. The story also has an evil side. The frightening part of the story was not the great beasts, as people often think of dinosaurs and their counterparts. The scary characters were the ape-men, who cruelly and viciously attacked our heros. These fictitous characters gave the story that something extra. Killing them was not politically correct, but it was necessary. Hey Disney, pick this one up and run with it on the big screen. It will be a hit if you keep to the original story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fine reading, May 10, 2000

I read this book for a book report. The idea of the book may sound catchy and interesting to most people, but the reading is too long for the context. Some sections were a little bit boring, but overall its a thrilling classic.
