Lost Civilizations? A Fascinating Book., September 5, 2011
This review is from: Lost outpost of Atlantis (Hardcover)
I found this book to be amazing. Richard Wingate covers a lot of territory here, from Father Crespi's mysterious "artifact" collection in Cuenca, Equador, South America to the Bimini Road in the Bahamas. He sorts through some of the confounding relics and marks left by a past culture that lead so many to think there was a much older "Lost Civilization" that thrived in the Caribbean and South America. So old that the evidence is barely visible. He acknowledges that there are many fakes and much misleading information, but the underlying mystery of it all is hard to dispute. The few pictures in this book are not high quality, but very informative. The book was written before the digital age took hold.
Richard Wingate is of a handful of authors to take this topic on before the New Age craze hit. Unlike some that have written on this subject, he writes of his own personal travels, experience, and adventures as an explorer and seeker of the truth about Atlantis. He raises questions concerning a much older lost civilization that may have been inventive and ingenious with the tools at hand. An enjoyable read devoid of some of the new age gimmicky mumbo jumbo. I am sorry to hear that Mr. Wingate has recently passed away. I just ordered his last book "Atlantis in the Amazon". I find this subject intriguing and am baffled that Father Crespi's treasures have never been formally catalogued and examined by science, whether fake or real, they still contribute to information regarding the culture that he was surrounded by. I hear they are all now locked away in the hands of the Catholic Church. This book is no longer published, if this is your interest and you run across this book, buy it - it's hard to find.
