Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The words "subtle" and "Ashton Kutcher" rarely appear in the same sentence, but here goes: A Lot Like Love, a romantic comedy starring Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet, is surprisingly and pleasantly subtle. The story starts when Emily (Peet, Igby Goes Down) and Oliver (Kutcher, Dude, Where's My Car?) meet on a flight to New York and have a tryst in the airplane bathroom. After a day's dalliance, they part and don't meet again for four years--when they meet, spend a day together, part, and don't meet again until...you begin to get the idea. The script could have been dangerously cute, but director Nigel Cole (who helmed the delightful Calendar Girls) carefully steers Peet and Kutcher, two actors not generally noted for their grasp of character nuance, towards fairly three-dimensional portrayals of two floundering twentysomethings who can't seem to find the right moment. There are a few rom-com cliches--at one point, Oliver serenades Emily in front of an audience of her neighbors--but most of the movie is low-key, engaging, and smacks of actual human experience. Also featuring Kal Penn (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) and Kathryn Hahn (Anchorman). --Bret Fetzer

Product Description
In the spirit of WHEN HARRY MET SALLY comes A LOT LIKE LOVE, the romantic comedy about destiny and the possibilities of a chance encounter evolving into a close encounter of the happily-ever-after kind. Ashton Kutcher (GUESS WHO) and Amanda Peet (SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE) set off sparks as opposites who attract and have a one-flight stand from LA to New York. When the trip's over, they are too -- and both move on but can't really let go. As they search for love that doesn't end in disaster, they keep finding each other. And while the chemistry that first brought them together keeps generating heat, the timing is always wrong. This funny and disarming story of modern romance will have you falling in love over and over again.

4.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good romantic comedy., September 5, 2005
By Joseph Tidline (Phoenix, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have never been a big fan of Ashton Kutcher's since most of his role consist of him being the annoying bumbling fool such as his role in FOX's 'That '70s Show' and films such as 'Dude Where's My Car' and 'Just Married'. The only film of his that I liked was his performance in 'The Butterfly Effect'. So when this film was first announced I never gave it a second thought until I saw the trailer. The trailer looked good and even though Kutcher was in it, it also starred the beautiful and talented Amanda Peet who I have loved since her role on the short lived WB series 'Jack & Jill'. I finally saw this film on DVD and I was pleasantly surprised at how good this film was. Not only did Amanda Peet give an excellent performance but Ashton Hutcher also did a good job as well. Even though it was a comedy there are other aspects to the film including romance and hints of drama. It is a wonderful film that I believe both men and women alike will find very entertaining and romantic. Over the coming years I see this film becoming a very popular date film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bravo! Good movie about 2 people destined to be together, August 29, 2005
A lot like Love is a story many people can relate to: From chance encounters with people to seeing someone now and again to the dreaded "I'm engaged" answer, this show takes you on a whirlwind of twists and turns.

This is about 2 young people who meet on an airplane, and begin an off and on relationship of sorts over the course of 7 years. They deny their destiny at times, but eventually fate will have it's way.

Kutcher and Peete are great in their roles. We see Peete again in a similiar role like she had in "Saving Silverman" where she is able to act like she doesn't want to give someone the time of day and is very standoff-ish. The two continue to try and meet up at different times but their interest levels at those times do not always conincide so they never seem to get together for the long haul. There is some progressive scenes showing how they affect one another throughout the course of seven years...one being kucher starting out as an avid photographer and later leaving his camera with her, only for her to pick it up and continue on with the hobby, eventually having a studio out of it.

The beginning is funny, the ending sweet and predictable, and everything in between is, as I said, some path's that we can all relate to when it comes to dating. I loved the movie and strongly recommend it for a rainy sunday afternoon at home...

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than I thought it would be, April 30, 2005
By Sean A. Rhodes (Aurora, Colorado) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
When you think of Ashton Kutcher, you're apt to think of a movie like... "Dude Where's My Car?", which in my opinion was not the best of films. It's hard to believe, but a romantic comedy such as this was actually quite enjoyable. It starts off kind of slow, but it becomes absorbing as the movie continues on. Warning to all the guys out there though, this is pretty much a chick flick. I'm a guy, but I happen to enjoy the soft subtle love story every now and then.

The movie begins seven years ago when a man named Oliver (Kutcher) sees a girl named Emily (Amanda Peet) break up with her boyfriend just before a flight to New York. They're both on a flight to New York. When Oliver has to go into the bathroom to clean up, he's followed by Emily. This is the first of several encounters they'll have over the years.

As the two explore New York, they have a chance to get to know one another. A few things in the beginning start off a little too slow, Oliver tries to go after Emily and she contantly shuns him away. Three strikes within the first twenty minutes of the film, and Oliver already strikes out.

Oliver also starts off as the sort of guy no girl in their right mind would want. He still lives with his parents, he has no car, and he's unemployed. The only thing he has is his charm. The two finally decide on a bet that in six years he won't live with his parents and he'll be successful. They drink to it, and Oliver gives up his parents phone number, claiming that when she calls, she won't find him. Throughout the film, those six years will pass.

The film first jumps about three years into the future in which Emily's boyfriend has just walked out on her on New Years. There's a party and she has no one to go with now. Flipping through her phonebook, she comes across Oliver's number and decides to give him a call. This is just the first of several times over the years they'll meet up. Most of the time, however, it's by chance.

Surprisingly, the movie didn't disappoint me. There were some cliches, such as when Oliver gives Emily a serenade in front of all her neighbors, and when Oliver and Emily finally decide they love each other, but then realize that "someone" is getting in the way.

I was also surprised that Ashton Kutcher did a fine acting job. I'm not a Kutcher fan, and I'm used to seeing him in stupid comedies. However, this film was sweet, and he did a good job.

Probably what I didn't like about this movie is that it's supposed to be a romantic comedy, but there aren't a whole lot of funny parts. It has its moments, but they're too few and far between. There's also the fact that the movie is just feels long. Some of the more tender moments are great, but the softer parts seem to be "fillers" to get the movie going more.

It was surprisingly good. If you want a decent love story, this is a good film. Not for comedy fans, and not for your stereotypical man. It IS a "chickflick" so guys, the warning here is, you may not like it.
