From Library Journal
Jackson is perhaps best known for her gripping and disturbingly thought-provoking short fiction, and this tape provides seven of these stories, from her best known "The Lottery" to some lesser-known but equally intense examples. The short story form is well suited to the audio format, often preferred by listeners who are reluctant to take on lengthier fiction but who still expect quality offerings. This tape will please them, and others as well. Narrator Carol Jordan, approaches her task with some deliberation and determination, which makes for an occasionally flat and narrow-ranged cadence. There is not much difference in the voices of the various characters, but overall her cheerful reading strikes a necessary contrast to the underlying eerieness and terror of the material. A good addition to audio collections.AHarriet Edwards, East Meadow P.L., NY

Review
"In her art, as in her life, Shirley Jackson was an absolute original. She listened to her own voice, kept her own counsel, isolated herself from all intellectual and literary currents...she was unique." --
Newsweek"It is the mark of a narrator operating at the peak of her craft that the listener finishes a book wanting to hear her read more. So it is with Ms. Stewart's energized reading." --
Library of Congress"Jackson could be funny or electrifying, as her famous story, "The Lottery," attests. Listeners are stunned, once again, by the terrifying ordinariness of Jackson's simple citizens going about their annual ritual of stoning a member to death. Stewart turns in a professional job of reading." --
The Arizona Daily Star, April 3, 1998"The stories remind one of the elemental terrors of childhood." --
James Hilton, New York Times Herald"The twist, the dig, and the unrelenting insights into human prejudices are present throughout...this is a collection that will make you
think while sending big and little chills down your spine." (Erica Bauermeister,

Erica Bauermeister, Great Books by Women"This audio collection pairs "The Lottery" with seven other Jackson stories, serving to demonstrate her range of style and subject and her expertise in providing twists of plots. Carol Jordan Stewart's professional background enhances the drama and underlying action of these stories, inviting leisure listening and promising plenty of absorbing listening." --
Midwest Book Review, June 1998"[Shirley Jackson's] fiction is some of the most important to come out of the American literary canon." --
