TWO THUMBS UP, November 23, 2006
This review is from: Lottery-Winners' Guide: When It Happens to You (Paperback)
Normally I wouldn't bother writing a review, but for this book I'm making the exception. Wow, the first worthy lottery book. Who would've ever thought that people who make $75,000 a year play the lottery almost 3 times more than others? Full of useful information, this title uses excellent sources to debunk the stereotype of lottery players and lottery winners.
It's amazing that the author was able to sweep across the entire subject of winning the lottery while at the same time answering so many questions. It's organized perfectly and does a terrific job in taking you from the purchase of lottery tickets to the drawing, the initial surprise (psychological and scientific) of winning, through claiming the jackpot and on through planning and hiring the right people. Lottery agencies should buy this book for jackpot winners. I give it TWO THUMBS UP.

INCREDIBLY INTERESTING, November 19, 2006
This review is from: Lottery-Winners' Guide: When It Happens to You (Paperback)
My friend who recommended this book said it was very informative, but she failed to mention how much fun it is too. The chapter on Psychology and the stories of divorce were fascinating. I've heard the horror stories of lottery winners, but never considered the reasons and preventable measures this book identifies. Just as the cover say, this book is "a must for every lottery playing household."

Good Source of Information, October 19, 2008
This review is from: Lottery-Winners' Guide: When It Happens to You (Paperback)
This is a nice "down and dirty" summary of things to prepare you for winning the lottery. As the Table of Contents is available to review before you buy the book, there really isn't a lot to say about it. The sections are straight-forward, it covers information from a variety of states, has pie charts, lotto claim form examples, statistical graphs and a lot of common sense information.
If I were to summarize, I would say the best advice given is even if you hit a big lotto you still need to be vigilant with your money. That seems like common sense to me, but I guess a lot of people think just because they have the cash they can buy whatever they want. If you buy whatever you want all the time, you will find the bottom of your lottery winnings. Plan for a set number of items to purchase (a new house, a new car, maybe some vacations) and then be a good steward of your money. You stay rich by respecting your money and if you don't it won't respect you.
There are lots of practical tips about the lottery claim process (I especially loved the section on Privacy), but I was a little disappointed in the text about managing money. The author cautiously suggests using a Private Financial Manager (reminding his readers about how ENRON bilked millions out of their retirement funds), but doesn't provide much information past that. He doesn't talk about incorporating one's self so people can't run into your car and sue you for everything you have or how to put money into a trust so it's protected from insufferable taxation. True, going into these topics probably isn't appropriate for the size or depth of this book, but as someone who wants to be well-prepared I believe those to be two incredibly important topics that were left out.
I think of this book as more of a PRE-lotto winning publication that everyone who plays the lottery should read. There could be an entirely different book written based on how bad our economy has tanked and what we need to be aware of to protect ourselves. THAT would be my next purchase (if it exists).
