5.0 out of 5 stars TWO THUMBS UP
Normally I wouldn't bother writing a review, but for this book I'm making the exception. Wow, the first worthy lottery book. Who would've ever thought that people who make $75,000 a year play the lottery almost 3 times more than others? Full of useful information, this title uses excellent sources to debunk the stereotype of lottery players and lottery winners...

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, But...
This is a small book, both in size and in content. It provides useful information, but the same information is likely available through the lottery office. I did find that it provides some commonsense concerns and addresses them practically. Overall, I was just expecting more.

It's amazing that the author was able to sweep across the entire subject of winning the lottery while at the same time answering so many questions. It's organized perfectly and does a terrific job in taking you from the purchase of lottery tickets to the drawing, the initial surprise (psychological and scientific) of winning, through claiming the jackpot and on through planning and hiring the right people. Lottery agencies should buy this book for jackpot winners. I give it TWO THUMBS UP.

4.0 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLY INTERESTING, November 19, 2006

My friend who recommended this book said it was very informative, but she failed to mention how much fun it is too. The chapter on Psychology and the stories of divorce were fascinating. I've heard the horror stories of lottery winners, but never considered the reasons and preventable measures this book identifies. Just as the cover say, this book is "a must for every lottery playing household."

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Source of Information, October 19, 2008

This is a nice "down and dirty" summary of things to prepare you for winning the lottery. As the Table of Contents is available to review before you buy the book, there really isn't a lot to say about it. The sections are straight-forward, it covers information from a variety of states, has pie charts, lotto claim form examples, statistical graphs and a lot of common sense information.

If I were to summarize, I would say the best advice given is even if you hit a big lotto you still need to be vigilant with your money. That seems like common sense to me, but I guess a lot of people think just because they have the cash they can buy whatever they want. If you buy whatever you want all the time, you will find the bottom of your lottery winnings. Plan for a set number of items to purchase (a new house, a new car, maybe some vacations) and then be a good steward of your money. You stay rich by respecting your money and if you don't it won't respect you.

There are lots of practical tips about the lottery claim process (I especially loved the section on Privacy), but I was a little disappointed in the text about managing money. The author cautiously suggests using a Private Financial Manager (reminding his readers about how ENRON bilked millions out of their retirement funds), but doesn't provide much information past that. He doesn't talk about incorporating one's self so people can't run into your car and sue you for everything you have or how to put money into a trust so it's protected from insufferable taxation. True, going into these topics probably isn't appropriate for the size or depth of this book, but as someone who wants to be well-prepared I believe those to be two incredibly important topics that were left out.

I think of this book as more of a PRE-lotto winning publication that everyone who plays the lottery should read. There could be an entirely different book written based on how bad our economy has tanked and what we need to be aware of to protect ourselves. THAT would be my next purchase (if it exists).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Financial Advice!!, April 14, 2006

It's about time somebody writes a book about how to plan for winning the lottery! Several years ago my wife and I won a decent amount of $ and this book sure would have been handy. The good news is that now that we have the KNOWLEDGE from this book, next time we win, we'll be much smarter.

Very well written. Thorough research. If you play the lottery or have the potential to come into a significant amount of money, buy this book.

This is very helpful to anyone who buys lottery tickets ever. How many of us really know what we would do if we really did win and this book demystifies the process of becoming a person of wealth virtually overnight and it's stunning implications. How NOT to get into trouble when you hit the jackpot is what you need to know.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really disappointing - if you don't already know this info I'd be surprised, June 6, 2009

Really disappointing book. Advice like "Table 4.1 illustrates the odd of Death Due to Injury as reported by the NSC" on how one should choose how one gets to the Lottery Office, by the safest means, is plainly simple-minded. It explains you'll be highly excited and more likely to kill yourself on the way (!!) if you travel by car (most unsafe), rather than bus (most safe). As if somehow Lottery winners should be taking more care than the rest of us! Laughable and ridiculous!

120 pages of mostly common sense that even the dumbest amongst us would know by instinct. Barely a personal anecdote amongst the pages to enliven it either. This is a kiddies manual masquerading as a serious guide to coming into large amounts of money.

I'll sum the advice for you: keep the ticket safe, get a good accountant, a finanical adviser too, oh, and don't spend it all at once.

Save the $10, even if you are now a millionaire, and go buy a copy of the latest 'Fast Company' magazine. Better financial advice, more appropriate, and certainly more entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars should say what to do after you win the lottery, July 18, 2010

This book is very informative it gives a lot of advice from the pros and cons of choosing cash or annuity payments of the jackpot prize to how to tell family members plus how to keep your privacy

It also explains taxes and how they are figured out. Even though it does not have info on how to win (wrong book) but it does give you excellent advice on what to be prepared for once you do become a millionaire, which a lot of uniformed winners experience the hard way only to go on tv to say that winning was the worst thing to happen to them in reality it can be the ultimate blessing giving one new freedoms in their lives once they have proper information to do so. And this book is the one it only has 125 pages and is very thin.

which is good for it gets right to the point and the contents help you pick the right answers on a fly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!, July 8, 2008
This review is from: Lottery-Winners' Guide: When It Happens to You (Paperback)
I have been studying the lottery and lottery winners lately and it has become evident to me than many people who win huge jackpots do not know how to handle the money. This book does a great job explaining what to do once you've won the lottery. While there are certainly great websites, like [...], offering information about what to do and what not to do with your winnings, this book certainly offers a substantial amount of information. I think this is a book worth buying even if you haven't won the lottery yet. There is no better time to start preparing!

I found this book to be very informative. Some people think they know what to do when they hit but sometimes they need to know the small details that can make the lottery winning a smooth transaction.
