Ian Wagstaff veers into the pits and pilots Haynes Manuals to a new victory. The "Lotus 72 Owners Workshop Manual" is not the standard tear-down and rebuild tome to which most Haynes readers are accustomed; This latest manual is a fan-pleasing glimpse into the workshops of team owner Colin Chapman and designer Maurice Philippe during Lotus' two decades at the top of Formula One racing. Wagstaff starts with a complete history of the marque, beginning with the first front-engined, single-seat racer which campaigned in the junior classes to the last Formula One racers of the 1980's. The highlights of the book are the photographs taken inside the shop during builds and rebuilds of the nine Lotus 72 chassis which reveal parts previously unseen. Classic Lotus, the present company which maintains the historic cars and artifacts, has contributed to the book and is one of the reasons for its success. There are a few pages dedicated to the maintenance of the Lotus 72, but the main focus is on the clever engineering which forever changed the configuration of Formula One cars. I highly recommend this book to race fans, designers, modelers, or anyone looking to be inspired by great minds.

I wasn't looking for a book on how to make or work on a Lotus 72, I bought this book because I was interested in learning about the basic mechanical aspects of a vintage F1 car. This book did an excellent job of that, plus I learned so much about the history of the vehicle and its long racing career, and even what the various drivers thought of the car itself. It also shows what it takes to actually own one and prep it for vintage racing, and that was very interesting. I definitely recommend it.

I am sure that the title "Owners' Workshop Manual" is applied to this book so it doesn't look out of place with your other Haynes books on the shelf, and perhaps your spouse won't notice you added a new one.

It's much more than that. The book covers so much of the history of how the '72 came into being, with interviews from key personnel and a lot of period photographs. It's worth the price for these chapters alone.

Yes, there is a chapter on how to buy a Lotus 72, but given so few were actually built, this is pretty much academic, and if you had the means and opportunity I suspect a potential buyer would go in with an army of experts, not just a few chapters of a book.

All up, it's worth the price if you are at all interested in Grand Prix cars of the 70's; even more so if (like me) you admire the work of Colin Chapman.

At the beginning of one of the greatest decades in Formula 1 history, the Lotus 72 broke new ground in aerodynamics and packaging. The text, images, and illustrations make you feel like functioning part of the team that brought success to several world champions in that great era!

The book is for Lotus aficianados of formula one racing. It has some interesting asides and nice pictures, but is not detailed enough to be a "manual". I enjoyed the book and will re-read and view the pictures many times to come.

Not really a manual for the car, interesting nonetheless. Contains historical technical information which was good, but other material feels like filler.

-Informative, with good overall content and interesting copy with unusual photos and diagrams. I liked the format of a "Haynes Manual"
