5.0 out of 5 stars Most Complete Reference for Notes I have seen!!
This is the BEST Notes Reference book I have come across. It covers many different areas. Content is definitely for more advanced users. Highly reccomended once you master the easy stuff!

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!
It is the most shallow coverage of Notes that I've ever seen. I still don't understand how they managed to pack so little information into so many pages.

For example, a new feature of 4.5 is Multidatabase indexing through a site search database. Here is the unabridged exerpt from this "reference" on site search:

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!, January 20, 1999
This review is from: Lotus Notes and Domino 4.5: Professional Reference (Hardcover)
It is the most shallow coverage of Notes that I've ever seen. I still don't understand how they managed to pack so little information into so many pages.

For example, a new feature of 4.5 is Multidatabase indexing through a site search database. Here is the unabridged exerpt from this "reference" on site search:

"The Multi Databse Indexing feature enables you to create many indices at once. After these indices exist, it is possible to search more than one database at a time for data (such as a client's name or company name). This feature can be extremely helpfull when designing a Web page. As shown in figure 8.21, you must be a manager of the file to enable this option."

That's it. That pathetic, inane, useless, and technically incaccurate blurb is all the info this book provides on site search. They don't even know what a site search database is (its the tool used to actually build a multidatabase index). And the worst part is that the whole book is like this. Uhh... I don't know exactly what this is but uhh.... here's the property box for it and uhh... you can click boxes and stuff on it. And uhh.. oh, yeah, you have to have sufficient access to do that.

Avoid this one like the plague. New Riders Publishing should really be ashamed of themselves.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Worst Notes Reference I Have Ever Seen, October 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Lotus Notes and Domino 4.5: Professional Reference (Hardcover)
Usually when I buy a book and it doesn't live up to my expectations I can still find some upside or bennefit from it. Not so with this weighty waste of tree and money. This is hands down the most worthless reference that I have ever seen for any technology. It goes into NO technical depth on any issue, in places it is an almost word for word regurgitation of the original Lotus' documentation <can you kids out there say copywrite infringement??>, and to add insult to incompetence it costs about 70$.

If you are a Lotus professional with any level of skill, avoid this book. I wouldn't even recommend it for beginners who have no experience with Notes because even though it provides the technical equivalent of "Notes For Dummies", it takes 1000 pages to do it!

I am extremely dissapointed in this book, especially since I bought it without really looking through it because I have been very pleased with the NT Professional Reference that New Riders published. Oops. So, if anyone from New Riders is out there, I haven't bought a New Riders book since I purchased this piece of crap and I'll be very carefull before doing so in the future.

This book is less than useless, I had more questions than answars after reading it. The book is terribly shallow and never goes into any depth.

5.0 out of 5 stars WAR, April 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Lotus Notes and Domino 4.5: Professional Reference (Hardcover)
This is the single best Domino/Notes book that I have even read. Unfortunately my admin feels the same way. She and I fight over it constantly. Most of the books have a few weak chapters with a lot of information that is boring for someone not learning the product. This goes much farther. To my knowledge, this is the only advanced comprehensive guide worth a damn!

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best source of Domino reference material around, December 24, 1997
This review is from: Lotus Notes and Domino 4.5: Professional Reference (Hardcover)
Great book, I would look it up at least once day. Having said that, the chapter on Java is a waste of space, and appears to have been added in a hurry. Otherwise this is the best one around (until they bring out a version for Domino 4.6 ?)

5.0 out of 5 stars If you buy one Notes/Domino book, make it this one., August 28, 1997

I'm a Notes/Domino Developer AND System Administrator. This book is the one that doesn't go back on the bookshelf -- it's always on my desk, within easy reach.

There are sections on everything -- Admin, Development (including LotusScript, Web/Notes issues, API), and Calendar/Scheduling. It's the most comprehensive Domino reference I've seen, and I think I've seen them all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book .., April 2, 1999

Read some reviews here.

Some folks feel it is not a good book, so I went to a local bookstore and spent an hour leafing ... for the 2nd time. For my project [ where there were some challenges, this book came closest to giving me script pointers, though not solutions]

I beleive this book is by far the best I have seen for Notes/Domino 4.x and would be happy if they released one for R 5.0 - same manner....

Great book in my personal opinion..and stands out in the Notes/Domino arena.
