1.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment, February 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Lotus Notes: The Complete Reference (Paperback)
While I can commend the authors on the concept, and for tackling this very complex and popular subject, this book disappointed me. It's a example of a very discouraging trend in computer books - a rushed into print, bloated, expensive, "me-too" book that rehashes information better presented elsewhere. Crucial concepts are glossed over, such as setting up and managing Notes domains (such as WHY you would want to do this), details of platform-specific techniques for setting up and connecting severs, etc. The reader would be better served by carefully reading the Lotus administrator document packs, and armed with specific questions, attend a Lotus Notes Deployment Class at their local IBM office. I noticed the gentleman who posted the glowing review of this book (hugo@mcs.com) is whom the book is dedicated to - one more annoyance, as this should go into the author review section.

The only book completely covering Lotus Notes deployment., March 10, 1998

This review is from: Lotus Notes: The Complete Reference (Paperback)

There are a lot of books out there that cover Lotus Notes from the programming point of view. This one, however, really gets to the heart of what it takes to effectively embark on a Notes project. From getting sponsorship, to laying out the work, to -yes- programming and systems administration, this is the one book on Notes I consistently rely on to guide me.

I wish more books were like this one. As any seasoned information systems professional will tell you, it is not the programming that poses the greatest challenges. Achieving the proper design and successfully deploying your enterprise systems are the aspects that truly raise the bar on information systems' excellence.

Great job, folks!
