5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what the title says
This is an introductory text about Lotusscript scripting language for Smartsuite and, in some measure, for Notes. Readers who are displeased with IDG's style of books may want to notice that this text is an official handbook licensed and recommended by Lotus Development Corporation. Meade uses a clearly folksy way of explaining the finer details of this language and, as a...

1.0 out of 5 stars Did the cover say LotusScript?
OK so maybe the cover did say LotusScript, but if you are a Notes Developer, FORGET THIS BOOK! The book has absolutly nothing that deals with Notes/Domino at all. Maybe if there are people out there that want to learn LotusScript for other products besides Notes, this MIGHT be ok. There is little more to say for Notes consultants besides look elsewhere!

1.0 out of 5 stars Totally useless!, July 12, 2000

I don't use Notes, just Approach... All I learned from this book is how to Click a button to show a Message Box. The author thinks he is very clever because he replaced the usual "Hello World" by "Goodbye Cruel World". If that is all you need Lotusscript for, then buy this book!

Unfortunately, I could not find any other book on the subject here... If someone knows one, please email me...

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money., February 9, 1999
This review is from: Lotus Script for Dummies (Paperback)
I am a 1-2-3 user and this book used 12 full pages of 322 on the subject. The rest of this book ties primarily into Word Pro with examples that don't relate to getting the results into the document. Almost all of the examples stay inside the Script Editor, which doesn't help me at all. If you're a programmer, I doubt that this book will enlighten you, if you're not, you still won't be one. The "for Dummies" humor is OK at first, but after the cute examples with cute results, the jokes just grate on you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good for Lotus Notes, June 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Lotus Script for Dummies (Paperback)
I thought this book was good in teaching the basics of Lotus Script, as well as the basic concepts of any language. However, if you want to script in Lotus Notes, then forget about it. Not knowing ANYTHING about LotusScript, I got a good foundation of how to do things and what things are, but as far as using the editor, how to add your own subs and functions, etc., it was no help as Lotus Notes is different than WordPro! This did not help you to differentiate between Notes Classes at all, although it did teach you about classes in general. Bottom line: good for a basic background, but won't get you very far with Lotus Notes.

1.0 out of 5 stars My rating is based on this book's usability with Lotus Notes, May 15, 1998

Do not buy this book if you're trying to learn LotusScript to use in Lotus Notes applications. It is focused more toward WordPro. I am a Notes developer and I didn't find the book useful at all.

This review is from: Lotus Script for Dummies (Paperback)
This is an introductory text about Lotusscript scripting language for Smartsuite and, in some measure, for Notes. Readers who are displeased with IDG's style of books may want to notice that this text is an official handbook licensed and recommended by Lotus Development Corporation. Meade uses a clearly folksy way of explaining the finer details of this language and, as a result, it sometimes seems that there's more jokes than substance. I heartily disagree. This book was written with the average computer user in mind and is good because it explains scripting across the entire suite of programs and yet is thorough enough to be considered a good reference for any one of them.

For those who think that this book is not worthy of consideration, it would be well to consider that this book is an introduction for the beginner not a tome for the advanced and expert users. I think it is far more important to get my work done in a timely manner than to obsess about whether my book was impressive or not. This book, though rare and out-of-print, is a good find and will serve well in the role of a primer for beginner to average Smartsuite/Notes users.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lotus script book for suckers, May 8, 2005
By
This review is from: Lotus Script for Dummies (Paperback)
I see the other reviewers all seem to have the same opinion as I did. I had reason to use Lotus Script. I just wanted to know the basics and nothing heavy.

It seems the Lotus Script in this book is the basics of how it interfaces with a different 1-2-3 application than I was using it in. I was using it with the Approach application.

As far as learning Lotus Script itself you won't get much instruction at all. You won't even get the basics.

The reviews are correct. This book is useless.

You will end up buying another book or struggling through just with the 1-2-3 help functions. You will however never open this book again.

I have heard the "for dummies" books are big sellers yet I feel like a sucker for wasting my money on this.

I have glanced through other "For Dummies" books and have to wonder what value these really have for their purchasers. I admit, they didn't seem anywhere as poor as this entry, but none that I looked at seemed of much value to beginners in any of the subjects.

I went on and finished my Lotus Script portions of my application without the aid of this worthless book. This book was not an aid in my learning during any step.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Thin, Not Applicable, December 28, 1998

This review is from: Lotus Script for Dummies (Paperback)
There was too little applicable information for me. I am using LotusScript in Lotus Notes and after reading the entire book, I came away feeling like I didn't learn anything I could apply usefully.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book focuses on LotusScript for Lotus WordPro & Suite., March 6, 1998
By
This review is from: Lotus Script for Dummies (Paperback)
I was looking for a book for a Notes developer who did not have Visual Basic background and wanted to learn LotusScript from scratch. Unfortunately, the examples and interfaces are well written if you want to use LotusScript for Lotus WordPro or their Suite, but did not match how Lscript is used in Notes, thus I stopped after the first 2 chapters. It may be usefull to someone if you already know scripting and want to work with the Lotus Smartsuite Lscript, but use it only as a backup if you want Notes ideas and skills for Lscript.
