5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful!, November 7, 2000

A friend recommended this cd to me, and I must say I wasn't sure whether I'd like it, but its brilliant, I LOVE it! So very beautifully done, both the singing and the music. It makes you feel relaxed, but it's not New Agey in a floaty way at all. The other reviews speak for themselves too, what a great find! Don't listen to the (too short) samples at the top of the page, just get the cd!

5.0 out of 5 stars smooth grooves: east meets west, November 28, 1999

This review is from: Lotus (Audio CD)
like other reviewers on this page I would not normally buy music billed as "world music", but that phrase is in some ways misleading when applied to Lotus. This album is full of subtle surprises, with Harry's sense of texture perfectly complementing the richness of Edenborough's voice. The more reflective pieces, like "Cicadas" and "Village Rain" are well placed in the running order so that the funkier tracks like "Within or Without You" keep the impetus up. I love the basslines and grooves here, and the Bali vocals and gamelan playing give the whole an genuinely ethereal feel that's hard to find elsewhere in the genre. Most of all though, check out this album for Alex Edenborough's voice, which soars across the tracks with grace, darkly-intimated passion and real musicianship.

These sounds, these grooves, and Alex Edenborough's voice will curl up at the base of your spine and blossom up, up and away from there. AIR AND ANGELS soars. LULLABY will put you away. A truly awesome effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars i can't believe how good this is, November 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Lotus (Audio CD)
i am not usually a fan of a whole c.d. worth of supposedly 'world music', but i have found lotus to be a refreshing tonic to the usual. on this cd i have found contemporary grooves, cool basslines, beautiful vocals - all this is a blend between what's happening on both sides of the world, with the elements of contemporary western culture (i.e. trip hop, ambient and dance grooves) with the essence of the eastern music tradition (some of the vocal samples are simply stunning and are used very innovatively by producer/writer, jimmy harry). furthermore, the song, 'i never knew what love meant' has to be one of the prettiest songs i've heard in years. a real worthwhile buy - i recommend this cd in a heartbeat

4.0 out of 5 stars If you like Lotus you *must* get Babble too!, April 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Lotus (Audio CD)
This album is great! It's sort of a world-pop style of music - exotic yet not too ethnic sounding. It has alot of the same mood as Enigma. They don't actually sound alike but fans of Enigma seem to take to Lotus quite well and vice versa. Let's just say they're different yet compliment each other at the same time - you know ... like two bands that should go on tour together sometime.

Actually, the girls voice reminded me alot of 'Everything but the girl' - it's a very similar type of singing and just wonderful to listen too.

However, there is one other band that sounds ALOT like Lotus and that is Babble. So if you like this cd or are considering purchasing it, don't forget to throw Babble's "Ether" album in your shopping cart as well : )

And while your at it throw Olive's "Extra Virgin" and Enigma's "The Screen Behind the Mirror" in there too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pushpaka.com Recommended..., January 9, 2001

Every once in a while you find a CD that you just dig. Listening to it gives you a groovy, new age fix, but has a content that resounds with the palpable feeling of other worlds. I remember feeling the first Enigma album doing that for me.

Lotus is a great Ambient, "world-groove" album, with lots to offer the listener in terms of vibe and inspiration. Pulling heavily from Eastern influences (see other reviews for details), but still having a slightly Western direction, the album takes you into a warm, spiritual place. The average tempo, I would estimate, is about 90 to 100 bpms (or less), but there are a few tunes in which the tempo picks up (a little), as in 'You are My Heaven,' and 'Within or Without You,' (this song has an excellent set of dance and club remixes - IF you can find them!).

Alex Edenborough's voice carries you into the music, and the rhythms are enough to make you either want to dance sensuously, or meditate.

I would say this album comes together like Enigma, Deep Forest, and Sade, with the spice and flavor of the Little Buddha Soundtrack. A very warm and worthwhile addition to your CD collection.

- Pushpaka

5.0 out of 5 stars soulful and enduring, February 17, 2000

Liked this music the first time I heard it. The songs stay with you, even into your dreams. The vocals are mellow, and the exotic instrumentals are deep. An excellent choice for any time of day.

I was looking for a different record and happend upon this one by accident and was hooked right away. Lotus is one of the better records I've heard for a long time. There's no fat in this record. Every track is great. The beats are fat and the singer has a great voice. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last!, November 27, 1999
This review is from: Lotus (Audio CD)
I heard this female artist sing live at a jazz gig about five years back and was lucky enough to lay my hands on a rough copy of a tape made then - since that evening I've been looking out in the shops for an album. Finally I've tracked down the finished product.

I like this very much - I've listened to each of the tracks available here and am about to have the CD shipped. I feel the mixture of sounds and the texture of the backing is superb. And I like where she and her collaborator have gone with her voice: the yearning, the wistfulness and the joy expressed through her technique is fantastic. Can anybody tell me where to get more?
