New to Lou, and love him!,

My husband recently introduced me to the world of Lou Grant, and I must say it is so refreshing to see a show which addresses real issues, without all the other sex and foul language that shows of today seem to need to get ratings. I only wish that more of the seasons were available. I'm hooked now, and want to see more!

Having worked as a reporter, I consider Lou Grant the best television representation of the actual press. This first episode establishes the series and introduces its themes, namely press ethics. It's entertaining and mentally engaging. We can only hope it will see a DVD release.

Good story about person in transition from one life and job to another. Story complete even if you don't know where the main character has come from in his past life and the former comic series (Mary Tyler Moore Show) to a drama which capitalized on the investigative journalism made famous by the real life Woodward and Bernstein of Watergate.

One of the best television series ever, yet not on DVD yet?? So much better than today's TV series. Very matter of fact about the nuances of various issues, that unbelievably are still pertinent even today, 30 years later. Deals very well with the ethics and responsibility of the media (something that's gone by the wayside to a large extent). This show is timeless and not sensationalized with gratuitous, unrealistic drama like so many other TV shows of today. We need it on DVD asap!! Just watching the first 3 seasons on Hulu is not sufficient!!

From this initial episode, you can see why the show won multiple Emmys,

While I was a big fan of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", until I popped this tape in, I had never seen an episode of the "Lou Grant" spinoff. His days in television behind him, Lou moves to Los Angeles and interviews for the position of city editor for the Los Angeles Tribune. The interviewer is his old friend Charlie Hume but Lou must also be accepted by Margaret Pynchon, majority owner of the paper. Margaret is a bit eccentric, but she is newspaper to the core.
Lou is hired and he immediately works to improve the quality, including injecting new life into a senior reporter. While the premiere episode must take the extra time needed to introduce the primary characters, it is easy to see why this show was so popular and the winner of multiple Emmys. All of the main characters have their quirks and there are clashes between the reporters, yet at the end, as Lou says, "We are a newspaper after all." One can look ahead and see a lot of potential when Margaret Pynchon stops and asks Lou if he needs a lift. You expect the two of them to reach an understanding and you are surprised when Lou asks her, "Isn't it out of your way?" and her response is to say, "Yes it is" and she drives off leaving Lou at the bus stop. An odd, yet suitable ending to what is an opening statement.

I can't get Lou Grant on DVD, it's not on UK TV anymore anywhere, and now I have to live somewhere else to use this service or Hulu (both of which I didn;t even know about until 10 minutes ago). Not happy.

I don't understand why a dvd can be shipped anywhere in the world and however I cannot download the entire season from Europe. Is this the future of TV series? No future DVD's releases?
Lou Grant is a cult show in my country Spain. Fox hasn't seen the potential "big sales" of a future DVD release here so I must buy the item outside. But now I don't have that option any more. |
