Biography

To the seventeenth-century poet Robert Herrick, rosebuds were a symbol of the fleeting pleasures of youth. Orson Welles made “Rosebud” the dying word of Charles Foster Kane, again a symbol of the tenacity of youthful memory. Kelly and Ivan - The Rosebuds - make music that embodies that certain spirit—youthful, but complex. Not at all fairytale, but magical. Not realistic, but ... Read more in Amazon's Rosebuds Store

Editorial Reviews

Loud Planes Fly Low is beautifully born of the struggle to define their relationship as bandmates and more importantly, friends outside of the context of marriage. It wasn't easy. Written and rewritten, recorded and re-recorded in fits and starts, Loud Planes Fly Low allowed Kelly and Ivan to have the very conversations about their relationship that they'd long avoided.

4.0 out of 5 stars Relating a Dream July 16, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Loud Planes Fly Low" is my introduction to The Rosebuds and is their fifth album. Based in North Carolina, the album comes amid the breakup of the marriage of the two members Ivan Howard & Kelly Crisp. Chris Stamey produced the set. Their music has a punch with dreamy sonic washes building the arrangements to emotional climaxes like on "Woods" & "A Story." The opener "Go Ahead" relies on melody to grip the listener with lyrics that sound like someone relating a dream, "Let's go ahead and grab our clothes and walk together where the water knows us & toss them over the edge in the lake and watch them sink." "Limitless Arms" has the same dreamy feel with Ivan's high vocals over the midtempo beat. "Come Visit Me" with Kelly's vocals front & center has the closest thing to a hook in a sweet pop tune. My favorite track is the largely acoustic "Without a Focus" which has the most accessible lyric, "I don't know how I'm supposed to feel." "Waiting for You" is another strong song with a breakup theme, "And I tried to be myself; And I tried to come around; And I've tried to leave my way." "Low Planes Fly Low" is somewhat marred by the utilitarian lyrics, but is bolstered by strong melodies and Ivan Howard's expressive vocals. It grows on you. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loud Planes Fly Low, over and over again July 28, 2011
By Kelly
Format:MP3 Music
This CD is absolutely amazing. I have owned it since it came out, and I still have not grown tired of it. Ivan and Kelly did a great job on this album! It's very personal, easy to relate to, and their voices are amazing. Not to mention, the sound of this album is incredible. Everyone raves about "Woods" being the albums best song, but my personal favorite is "Cover Ears." Buy it, you'll love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent August 18, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
I'm absolutely loving this album, might be one of my favorites of the year. And I listen to a lot of music. Start with Woods and then go from there to Cover Ears (the title containing track), Go Ahead, and on.
